DENVER, Colo. - The Regis University men's soccer team improved to 5-3-1, 4-1-1 RMAC, this afternoon after defeating the Adams State University Grizzlies (0-8-2, 0-4-1 RMAC). Freshman
Ethan Willson was the lone Ranger to score for RU, netting his first collegiate goal.
How It Happened: Despite tallying 14 first-half shots, the Rangers were unable to garner a goal throughout the opening 45 minutes. Regis continued to push the Grizzlies on offensive attacks, but were unlucky and headed into halftime with a knotted 0-0 score.
Most of period two read this same script. The Rangers took five consecutive shots within the first nine minutes, none of which struck gold. RU defense held Adams State to just three shots in the second half, the first finally coming in the 66th minute of action. At last, in the 81st minute, the Rangers were able to turn their luck around and put themselves on the board.
John Halter found
Ethan Willson on a pass from inside the 18-yard box that Willson easily buried in the back of the net to put RU up 1-0. Regis would finish the contest with another trio of shots but ultimately capped the game in a one-goal victory.
Game Notes: The eight shots and two shots on goal that Adams State took in the contest paled in comparison to the Rangers' season high 29 shots, 10 of which were on goal. Regis also picked up more corner kicks, finishing with 13 while the Grizzlies tallied six. Not surprisingly, ASU did outnumber the Rangers in saves, collecting nine compared to the two that
Chase Webert gathered for RU.
Porter Milner and
Joe Mansfield led Regis with six shots apiece, three and two on goal respectively. Willson went one-for-one on the day, converting on his only shot attempt.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis will now head back out on the road as they travel to Durango, Colorado to take on Fort Lewis College in a 3:30 PM contest on Friday, October 5. Following that, the Rangers will face 11th ranked Colorado Mesa University on October 7 in Grand Junction, Colorado. Action for that highly anticipated match will start at 2:30 PM.
