Rangers on Three-Game Win Streak After 2-0 Shut Out of Colorado Mesa

Dolan earns his fourth shutout of the year and the second of back-to-back

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team changed its playing field due to snowfall the day before but proceeded to come away with a 2-0 win over Colorado Mesa at Colorado School of Mines' Stermole Soccer Stadium on Friday.

"I thought Pascal [von Matthey] scored a world-class goal today," said coach Tony McCall. "[He had] composure, didn't have a lot of room; it was world-class I thought. I thought overall we were the better team. I thought we had a little bit more composure about us. We controlled the game a little more.

"But again, Colorado Mesa is a very, very strong program with a rich history, and we feel as if we've got one off of our backs now. It's been a little bit of a while since we've beaten Mesa. They've been strong recently, but I think it shows our young group are coming through, and they're starting to believe in themselves."

How It Happened: In the 18th minute of play, sophomore midfielder Ben Shepherd located freshman forward Pascal von Matthey, who knocked the ball into the upper-right corner of the goal box for the Rangers' 1-0 lead. von Matthey's score proved to be the game-winner.

An unexpected insurance goal came in the 24th minute in which the ball brushed off a Mavericks player and into Colorado Mesa's own goal, giving Regis a 2-0 advantage.

Up to that point and for the remainder of the game, the RU defense did its part. The Rangers only allowed seven shots, including three that were on-target through the duration of the 90 minutes.

CMU last attempted a shot-on-goal in the 75th minute when senior forward Lawan Abary fired a shot to the top-right corner of the goal, but it was saved by junior goalkeeper Tim Dolan.

Dolan finished the game with three saves and his fourth shutout of the season. This also marks the first time this year in which he earned shutouts in consecutive matches.

Regis and the Mavericks were deadlocked in shots, 7-7, but RU edged Colorado Mesa in shots-on-goal, 4-3.

Game Notes: von Matthey (1 G, 4 S, 3 SOG) had the game-high in goals, shots and shots-on-goal and claimed the lone individually scored goal of the match. Shepherd (1 A, 1 S) was credited with the game's only assist, being pivotal in von Matthey's goal. Junior forward Parker Klein (2 S, 1 SOG) had the Rangers' other on-target shot attempt. Dolan (3 SV) earned his fourth shutout on the year.

Up Next for the Rangers: Upon earning its third win in a row, RU improves to a 6-4-1 overall record and a 5-2-0 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Rangers return home to Regis Match Pitch to host Fort Lewis (6-1-3, 4-1-1 RMAC) on Sunday at 3 p.m.

With one game against a tough RMAC opponent in the books for the weekend, McCall is expecting more of the same in the Skyhawks.

"Another really tough game," McCall said. "I'm looking forward to it. Fort Lewis, they're going well right now, and we have an opportunity to get another three points, come out, and put ourselves in a good spot for the final running."
