DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team closed out the weekend without allowing a single goal while coming away with a solid 1-0 win over Fort Lewis on account of junior forward
Parker Klein's goal at Regis Match Pitch on Sunday.
"I thought by that stage [before getting a 1-0 lead], we could've been one or two up, but I thought Fort Lewis defended well," said coach
Tony McCall. "Their goalkeeper played very well. But we were creating good chances, and I thought it was just a matter of time before we put one away.
"Fortunately, P.K. scored another one, and we're very excited for him, and it was a big win for us. A big six points for us this weekend, two very good programs, and it gives us an opportunity now to chase down Mines, who are leading the conference."
How It Happened: Junior forward
Parker Klein received a pass in front of the heavily covered goalbox in the 16th minute of play from freshman forward
Pascal von Matthey. Klein then drilled the ball into the bottom-left corner of the goal for the Rangers' 1-0 lead.
In spite of multiple opportunities to capitalize on its initial goal, the eventual game-winner, Regis succeeded in playing solid defense throughout the game and only allowed three shots, including two on-target.
The Skyhawks last threatened to score with just 1:09 left in the game when senior defender Marshall Metzger managed to get an on-target shot off. However, junior goalkeeper
Tim Dolan was right in the path of the shot oriented towards the bottom-left corner of the goal.
Dolan racked up his third shutout in a row while recording another two saves in the process.
For the match, RU dominated on the shot count, 21-3. This tally included a decisive shot-on-goal tally of 9-2.
Game Notes: Klein (1 G, 4 S, 2 SOG) scored the match's only goal, his second game-winner of the year. von Matthey (1 A, 4 S, 2 SOG) earned his second assist of the year. Sophomore midfielder
Ben Shepherd (5 S, 2 SOG) claimed the game-high in shots. Sophomore defenders
Michael Jimenez (1 S, 1 SOG) and
Nick Mootz (1 S, 1 SOG) as well as freshman forward
Aymaro Vargas (1 S, 1 SOG) all had their lone shot attempts on-target. Dolan (2 SV) earned his third straight shutout on the season and his fifth of the year.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis improves to a 7-4-1 record overall and 6-2-0 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. RU will go into the back half of the season's final homestand when it hosts CSU-Pueblo (3-8-0, 3-4-0 RMAC) at Regis Match Pitch on Friday at 3 p.m.
After a weekend in which the Rangers earned six points in conference play, McCall wants to keep the momentum going.
"We'll roll it out again, and hopefully, we can get three points on Friday, and then build off of that again," McCall said. "But, I think this is a confident group. We create a lot of chances. I would like to see us convert a higher percentage of the opportunities that we create. But, can't complain; the boys battled hard today, and you saw at the end how important this win was for us as a group."
