DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team led early but ultimately fell to CSU-Pueblo, snapping its win streak at four, in a chilly game on Friday at Regis Match Pitch.
"Very disappointed as we let a good opportunity go today," said coach
Tony McCall. "We obviously did not play to anywhere near our potential, but this was always going to be a journey of ups and downs. Last week, we had our tails up, but today, we just didn't turn up."
How It Happened: Early in the 52nd minute with the score tied, 2-2, sophomore forward Malte Ruether of the ThunderWolves found redshirt senior defender Michael Chism open deep in heavily contested Rangers territory. Upon receiving the ball on a cross, Chism drilled it into the bottom half of the crossbar and over the goal plane for a 3-2 lead and the eventual game-winner.
Regis started things off right in the third minute of play when junior midfielder
Nico Denton crossed the ball to junior midfielder
John Halter, who finished right in front of the left side of the goal for an early 1-0 advantage.
The lead didn't last long though on account of an equalizer, 1-1, by freshman midfielder Vinzent Zingel in the 11th minute. A cross from junior forward Carlos Espinoza was just right outside of RU freshman goalkeeper
Aidan Lantaff's reach, which allowed the ball to travel behind him and into Zingel's possession. Zingel then lightly tapped an unobstructed lob into the goal.
CSU-Pueblo later took its first lead on a 15th-minute corner kick taken by Chism. It was on Chism's kick that freshman defender/midfielder Daniel Himmelsbach connected into the back of the net for the go-ahead 2-1 advantage, which CSUP took into halftime.
The Rangers knotted the game up at 2-2 late in the 50th minute when senior midfielder
Luca Kother located sophomore forward
Ethan Willson, who scored to bring the game to its second tie.
Regis dominated the ThunderWolves in shots, 16-6, and edged them in shots-on-goal, 5-4. In fact, the second-half shots tally was 9-1 in favor of RU. Unfortunately, CSU-Pueblo's lone closing-half shot proved to be the game-winner.
In his collegiate debut, Lantaff recorded one save and played the entire game.
Game Notes: Halter (1 G, 2 S, 2 SOG) gave the Rangers an early lead and had both of his shot attempts on-target. Willson (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) made his one shot count as it brought Regis back into a tie early in the second half. Denton (1 A) was pivotal in giving RU its early lead, while Kother (1 A, 1 S) helped in bringing the game back into a tie. Junior forward
Parker Klein (3 S, 1 SOG) and freshman forward
Pascal von Matthey (2 S, 1 SOG) each had one on-target shot during the game. Lantaff (1 SV) played all 90 minutes of the match and recorded his first-ever save.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers drop to a 7-5-1 record overall and a 6-3-0 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. Regis will next host Adams State (1-8-1, 1-6-1 RMAC) on Senior Day at Regis Match Pitch on Sunday at 3 p.m.
With only five games to go before the RMAC Tournament, McCall wants his players to be up for the challenges ahead.
"Young players are inconsistent, but we cannot continue to use inexperience as an excuse," McCall said. "Now, we look forward to Sunday and Adams State."
