COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After two impressive three-set sweeps this past weekend, senior setter
Silvia Basso and redshirt-senior
Kristen Hornung were named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Players of the Week.
Basso (Pordenone, Italy) is no stranger to these accolades, but this is her first RMAC Setter of the Week award in 2019. In the match against Western Colorado University on Friday, Basso had already made a strong case for RMAC Setter of the Week, recording 42 assists in a three-set win for No. 16 ranked Regis. However, the next night the senior handed out 40 more assists in three sets, amounting to 82 assists through six sets of play. Basso's 13.67 assists per set average was the highest among all players over the weekend.
Hornung (Overland Park, Kan.) has been on a remarkable roll over the past few games, leading to her first RMAC Defensive Player of the Week award for 2019. The middle blocker continued to play very well in the two three-set wins this weekend as she recorded 15 total blocks and 20 kills. More impressive is that she did not commit a single attacking or blocking error during that stretch. She posted a 2.50 blocks per set average to lead all players, and in the Saturday match with Colorado Mesa University, Hornung matched a career-best with 10 total blocks.
These ladies have been major keys to the five-match winning streak that No. 16 Regis currently owns.
The No. 16 ranked Regis University volleyball team hits the road this weekend to battle the Grizzlies of Adams State University on Friday at 7 p.m. The next night, the Rnagers will head to Fort Lewis College to take on the Skyhawks at 5 p.m. in Durango.
