LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team commenced its final road trip of the 2019 season with a strong second half to beat Colorado Christian, 3-0, at Trailblazer Stadium on Friday.
"A good win today, where we had to be patient as a resolute CCU had a game plan to get players behind the ball," said coach
Tony McCall. "We played with discipline and were able to break them down with a fantastic finish from Davi.
Â
"Getting two goals off the bench and changing the game, it was a spark that we needed. Every game until the end of the season has added significance so we are excited to see how the remaining games play out."
Â
How It Happened: Late in the 69th minute with no score, junior defender
Danilo Pekovic took control of a loose ball and shot from 25 yards outside the goal box. The shot deflected off the cross bar and past the goal plane to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead, which they wouldn't relinquish.
Â
Pekovic wasn't finished though. After a foul was committed that resulted in a penalty kick, Pekovic succeeded in adding insurance by getting the ball past freshman goalkeeper Max Collingwood's grasp for the 2-0 Regis advantage in the 76th minute.
Â
In the 82nd minute, sophomore forward
Kristian Hooker fielded Pekovic's touch through the middle, which Hooker drilled 15 yards away from the left side and brought the score to 3-0.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Aidan Lantaff earned his first-career shutout and recorded one save when sophomore midfielder Jorge Lopez's 26th-minute shot was saved by Lantaff in the top-right corner.
Â
RU decisively won the shots count, 18-2, as well as the shots-on-goal tally by a 7-1 margin.
Â
Game Notes: Pekovic (2 G, 1 A, 2 S, 2 SOG) made both of his shots count and had the game-highs in both goals and assists. Hooker (1 G, 3 S, 1 SOG) brought the Rangers additional insurance late in the game. Sophomore midfielder
Ben Shepherd (5 S, 2 SOG) had the game-high in shot attempts. Junior forward
Parker Klein (1 S, 1 SOG) and senior midfielder
Porter Milner (1 S, 1 SOG) both had a shot on-target. Lantaff (1 SV) recorded the first shutout of his career.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis climbs to a 9-5-1 record overall and an 8-3-0 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. RU continues its season-ending road trip at Metropolitan State University of Denver (7-7-1, 5-5-1 RMAC) at The Regency Athletic Complex on Sunday at 1 p.m. during Military Appreciation Day.
