ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team kicked off a pair of weekend road matches on Friday with a big 5-1 victory over Adams State at ASU Soccer Field.
"I think we didn't play particularly well," said coach
Tony McCall. "[But] we defended well and took chances that came our way. Whenever we play like this, we have the potential to be quite dynamic."
How It Happened: Not long after the Rangers grabbed a 1-0 lead, junior forward
Jean Carre made the most of his penalty-kick attempt in the 20th minute and doubled the Regis lead, 2-0. This gave RU all the goals it needed for the remainder of the game.
Grizzlies senior defender Abdoulie Danso cut the Rangers' lead in half, 2-1, with an unassisted goal at the 26:28 mark of play. It was the closest Adams State would get.
With a 2-1 lead at the half, Regis only intensified its offense. In an unusual play, a cross by sophomore forward
Ethan Willson deflected off an ASU player into the Grizzlies' own goal and grew the RU lead to a 3-1 margin a minute into the second half.
Late in the game in the 78th minute, senior midfielder
Luca Kother received a pass from sophomore midfielder
Ben Shepherd and put the ball past the goal plane for a 4-1 advantage.
Sophomore forward
Kristian Hooker capped off the Rangers' scoring effort, 5-1, with his 84th-minute score on an assist from junior midfielder
John Halter.
The Regis offensive surge commenced when Kother found sophomore midfielder
Michael Jimenez, who scored in the 18th minute of the opening half to give RU a 1-0 lead, an advantage it never surrendered.
The Rangers were very impressive on offense and outshot the Grizzlies, 20-8, and this margin included a 14-2 count in shots-on-goal.
Game Notes: Kother (1 G, 1 A, 1 S, 1 SOG) played a role in at least two of Regis' five goals on the day. Carre (1 G, 4 S, 2 SOG) claimed the game-high in shot attempts. Halter (1 A, 2 S, 1 SOG) and Shepherd (1 A, 1 S, 1 SOG) had a share of the game-high in assists. Hooker (1 G, 3 S, 2 SOG) and Jimenez (1 G, 2 S, 2 SOG) both scored a goal and attempted a pair of on-target shots. Junior goalkeeper
Tim Dolan (1 SV) allowed only one goal during regulation.

Up Next for the Rangers: RU improves to a 4-4-1 record overall and a 3-2-0 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Rangers conclude their roadtrip at CSU-Pueblo (2-6-0, 2-2-0 RMAC) at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Â
With his several trips to Pueblo, McCall expects a tough atmosphere for Regis on Sunday.
Â
"It's always a difficult fixture going into Pueblo," McCall said. "The conditions can be quite challenging. It will be a hard-fought contest as it should be in the conference currently."
