PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team completed the back end of a road trip with a strong defensive effort which yielded a 2-0 shutout over CSU-Pueblo at Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium on Sunday.
"Obviously, very happy to get six points this weekend," said coach
Tony McCall. "Down at Pueblo is always a tough place to go. We didn't play particularly well in the first half, but I thought in the second half, the boys showed a lot of character and really dug it out. Obviously, Nick [Mootz] scoring off of a corner [kick]. That was a scrappy header, and Pascal [von Matthey]'s goal was probably the more quality of the two goals that we scored today."
How It Happened: Midway through the 54th minute, sophomore defender
Nick Mootz received sophomore midfielder
Ben Shepherd's corner kick and headed the ball into the goal box for the Rangers' 1-0 lead.
As it turned out, Regis had the only goal it needed but proceeded to play quality defensive while adding insurance.
Freshman forward
Pascal von Matthey added to the cause in the 81st minute of play upon meeting junior forward
Parker Klein's pass and feeding the ball over the goal plane for a 2-0 lead with the insurance goal.
RU won the shots battle by a 15-11 margin as well as the shots-on-goal duel, 7-4.
Additionally, junior goalkeeper
Tim Dolan earned his third shutout on the year with his four saves.
Dolan recorded half of those saves in a 32-second span. He successfully saved a bottom-center shot from junior midfielder Richard Panknin in the 35th minute before preventing a bottom-right shot from redshirt senior defender Michael Chism in the 36th minute.
His last real threat came at the 71:34 mark when he saved a bottom-left attempt from freshman midfielder Vinzent Zingel.
Dolan's day started with a bottom-center save on account of a 17th-minute shot from freshman forward/midfielder Josua Hall.
Game Notes: Mootz (1 G, 1 S, 1 SOG) proved to have the game-winning goal in his sole attempt on the day. von Matthey (1 G, 5 S, 1 SOG) gave the Rangers a goal cushion with his insurance score. Shepherd (1 A, 3 S, 2 SOG) assisted on the game-winning goal. Klein (1 A) contributed the insurance-goal assist. Dolan (4 SV) notched his third shutout of the season.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis climbs to a 5-4-1 record overall and a 4-2-0 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. RU will next host Colorado Mesa (6-1-2, 4-0-2 RMAC) at Regis Match Pitch on Friday at 3 p.m.
McCall knows that this upcoming weekend's slate of games is going to be hard, but his team will be up to the competition.
"Going into next weekend, it's a big weekend for us," McCall said. "We have two games at home, one against Colorado Mesa and one against Fort Lewis. Our Friday game against Mesa will I think be a cracker. Mesa [is] a quality program. We're looking forward to matching up against them to see where we're at.
"With Fort Lewis, obviously they're also at the top of the conference standings, and they're going to be a very difficult opponent as they always are. But, we're looking forward to the challenge, and we feel that we can win ugly, and we can also get it done and be easy on the eyes. Looking forward to the weekend coming up. It's a big weekend, and it will be a good challenge for our young team. But overall, very happy with this weekend, six points, two road games has been exceptional for us."
