Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 8 Rangers open season with 15-5 rout of ThunderWolves

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 8 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (1-0) got off on the right foot in the season-opening 15-5 win against the Colorado State University – Pueblo ThunderWolves on Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened: The game did not start out how Regis would have liked with CSU-Pueblo scoring four of the game's opening six goals to take a 4-2 lead after nearly 14 minutes had elapsed. That was when the Rangers were able to lock in and change the pace of the game for good.

RU managed to score six of the final seven total goals that were scored in the opening half, giving the home side an 8-5 advantage on the scoreboard heading into the halftime break. Following halftime, Regis looked like a completely different team. They started to look like the team that garnered a No. 8 ranking in the Preseason IWLCA Coaches' Poll.

The Rangers did not allow a single goal in the second half, capping off a 35:14 stretch where they held the ThunderWolves scoreless. Additionally, the offense caught a little spark as they netted a total of seven goals in the second half, propelling the team to a 15-5 win in their season opener.

Game Notes: The offense was led by a host of players including the reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Offensive Player of the Year, senior Sarah Myres, who cashed in six goals in her first outing of 2019. The senior also grabbed three draw controls and two ground balls in the contest. Sophomore Kyleigh Peoples (1 G, 3 A, 3 DC, 1 GB, 1 CT) and junior Ali Vanek (3 G, 1 A) each chipped in with four points on the day. Senior Wendy Donier had a superb all-around game tallying two goals, one assist and two draw controls.

Defensively, it was freshman Maya Quigley who led the team with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior Lauren Hurd flashed her skill set on both ends of the field, scoring two goals, dishing out one assist, causing two turnovers and securing three ground balls and four draw controls in the game. In between the pipes, the Preseason RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year, sophomore Elle Crawford, made eight saves while only allowing five goals. The netminder also notched a caused turnover and two ground balls in the effort.

Up Next for the Rangers:The No. 8 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team will travel to Colorado Springs to take on the Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs on Saturday, February 23 at 1 p.m. for another non-conference affair.
