DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (1-0) started off the 2019 season on the right foot, handing St. Edward's University (3-1) their first loss of the season, 11-4.
How It Happened: The score remained knotted at zero until senior
Mickey Meinhofer hit a lead-off triple to put himself into scoring position in the second inning. A sacrifice fly, off the bat of junior
Kennedy Phillips, allowed Meinhofer to score the Ranger's first run of the season.
St. Edward's responded quickly as they capitalized on an RU error to score two-runs in the very next frame.
With two-outs in the bottom of the third, senior
Connor Rochon singled up the middle to spark a three-run rally. Junior
Coby Zimmerman followed with a triple to right-center field, allowing Rochon to score. With Zimmerman on third, senior
Logan Heflebower hit a double down the infield line to record his first RBI of the season and allowing Regis to score their second run of the inning. Meinhofer continued his good play with a single that allowed Heflebower to cross home plate to give Regis a 4-2 advantage.
The Hilltoppers scored a run in the top of the fourth inning after being dealt a lead-off walk. With the Rangers unable to score in the fourth and fifth inning, the Hilltoppers were able to tie the game in the top of the sixth.
After going scoreless for three-straight innings, the Rangers found an answer in the seventh inning. Junior
Ryan Tierney doubled early in the inning and advanced home on a throwing error. Heflebower reached base on the error and later advanced to third and ultimately scored after a couple of wild pitches from the Hilltoppers.
After a single and three walked batters, sophomore
JJ Reeves scored another RU run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Regis then scored again on a wild pitch with Tierney crossing home plate and doubling the Rangers lead over the Hilltoppers, 8-4. RU added three more runs on bases loaded walks and wild pitches, giving them an 11-4 victory.
