DURANGO, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team notched off two wins this weekend as they took down the Fort Lewis Sky Hawks (9-14, 5-12 RMAC) 49-39 in Durango, Colorado. Regis now improves to 12-10, 8-9 RMAC, on the season.
How it Happened: In the opening minutes, the Rangers fell behind by three-points before
Elly Walters and
Emma Sterkel cashed in a pair of consecutive triples to gain control. Their lead would be short-lived however, as the Sky Hawks delivered a 10-3 scoring run that put them ahead 15-8 going into the second.
Whitney Jacob opened the second quarter with a three-pointer while
Shelby Espinosa added a layup to bring the deficit down to two-points. Following a nearly three-minute scoring silence,
Majestie Robinson and Walters traded turns cashing in buckets from behind the arc. With under two minutes to play, Jacob and Sterkel combined for five points, creating a 27-22 gap between themselves and the host heading into the locker-room.
Regis struggled to maintain control in the third period and eventually lost the lead with just over seven minutes on the clock. Robinson sunk a three that put RU on top again while Jacob and
McKenna Bishop netted a lay-up and triple respectively to keep the Sky Hawks at bay at 36-33 at the end of the quarter.
Jumpers from Jacob and Sterkel heightened the difference and behind an Espinosa three-pointer the Rangers found themselves leading by ten. Fort Lewis continued to fight, chipping away to pull themselves within six but Regis held on to come out the victor with a 49-39 decision.
Game Notes: Three Rangers reached double-figures this evening as Jacob lead with 13 points and nine rebounds. Walters and Robinson both contributed 10 points apiece while Robinson dished out a team-best six assists. Espinosa went to work underneath the basket, picking up 15 rebounds while adding five steals and as many points.
The Rangers finished with 30% shooting from the floor, going 18-for-60. From three-point range they were 32.3%, shooting 10-of-31. Both teams finished with 38 rebounds but the greatest Regis advantage came in turnover form as they limited themselves to 12 while forcing the Sky Hawks to commit 21.
