Miguel Marquez singled through the right side, scoring senior
Ryan Tierney and prevailing the Rangers to a 7-6 extra inning win over Wayne State College (6-3) on Friday afternoon.
How It Happened: RU looked to be in control of the game after creating a 6-0 cushion through the third inning, but the Wildcats came storming back, scoring six unanswered runs in three innings. Regis got the scoring started with two runs on a hit and an error in the bottom of the second before adding three in the second and one in the third.
The contest went into extra innings after Wayne State tied the game in the sixth inning. Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings. Both teams protected the plate until the Rangers scored the game winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
RU recorded three hits in the ninth frame to send Tierney, the walk-off run, across Homeplate.
Game Notes: Regis tied their single game season-high with 11 total hits. Marquez (3-6, 1 RBI), who accounted for the winning hit, tallied a team-high three hits. Sophomore
Thomas Alexander (2-5) and Tierney (2-4, 1 RBI) were the other two Rangers to record multiple hits.
The Wildcats also tallied 11 hits but committed five errors compared to four for RU.
Freshman
Justin Kleinsorge got the start on the mound. He went four complete innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Kleinsorge recorded one of the two Regis strikeouts. Senior
Matt Heibult (2-0) got his second win of the season after pitching the final 3.1 innings. He allowed four hits and no runs.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will begin RMAC play next weekend as they host Colorado Mesa on Friday, March 8 at 2 p.m. The game will be the first of a four-game series.
