DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (5-10, 0-2 RMAC) opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Saturday but fell victim to No. 2 Colorado Mesa University (14-2, 2-0 RMAC) on the Regis Baseball Field. The Mavericks took game one 6-10 before securing game two 3-7.
How It Happened | Game One: The Mavericks quickly got out to a 0-6 lead, scoring two runs on two hits in the second and four runs on four hits in the third. Regis was able to get on the scoreboard by way of junior
Ryan Tierney in the third inning.
Tierney tallied the second Ranger hit of the game to get on base with one out. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, allowing sophomore
Marcus Salvato to send him across home plate on a sacrifice fly.
The Mavericks stretched their lead to 1-7 with a run in the fourth inning. The score remained the same until RU added two more runs to their total in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore
Thomas Alexander led-off the inning with a single to left field. He made his way into scoring position by way of a Tierney single. It was Salvato, again, that sent a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Alexander and earning an RBI. Tierney came around to score, making the score 3-7, when senior
Connor Rochon hit an RBI-double to right-center.
After four-straight scoreless frames, CMU extended their lead to 3-10, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the eighth. Regis, who entered the bottom of the ninth with a seven-point deficit, looked to threaten the Mavericks' lead late. The Rangers managed three runs on two hits and three walks in the frame, but they were retired with the tying run on deck.
Game Notes | Game One: Four RU batters laid down multiple hits, but CMU bested them 16-11 in the hit column. Junior
Coby Zimmerman (2-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI) recorded all three of his RBI's in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run shot to left field. Rochon (2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI), Tierney (2-4) and senior
Mickey Meinhofer (2-3, 1 2B) were the other three Regis players with more than one hit.
The Rangers were pitted against a pitcher that has previously allowed just one run on three hits in 18.2 innings of work. However, in 6.2 innings, RU was able to score three runs on eight hits against JR McDermott.
Alexander recorded a team-high 10 putouts at first base. The Mavericks committed two errors compared to just one for Regis.
Junior
Cobe Karhoff (1-3) was given the loss after pitching the first three innings of the game. He allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out one batter.
How It Happened | Game Two: The Rangers flipped the script, taking a 2-0 lead with three hits in the first inning. Two of the hits were doubles of the bats of Salvato and Rochon. The third hit was a Zimmerman RBI-single through the right side. Both Salvato and Rochon scored in the frame.
The game got away from RU in the second inning when they surrendered their lead, allowing five runs on five hits. The Mavericks lead by as many a 2-7 through five innings. Regis earned their next and final run in the bottom of the sixth. Zimmerman accounted for the run after getting on the base path via a walk.
Game notes | Game Two: Tierney (2-3) contributed two hits for the second-straight game while Salvato (2-4, 1 2B) chimed in with two hits. Salvato's double was his first extra-base hit of the season. CMU out hit the Rangers 6-10.
Sophomore
Colin King (0-2) was given the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in four innings of worked. He struck out five batters, raising his season total to nine.
