DENVER, Colo. – The No. 2 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (16-2, 4-0 RMAC) proved to be too much for the Regis University baseball team (5-12, 0-4 RMAC). Colorado Mesa completed the series sweep with wins of 9-18 and 2-12, respectively, on Sunday.
How It Happened | Game One: The Rangers took a two-point lead, 4-2, after scoring four runs in the second inning. Junior
Coby Zimmerman drew a lead-off walk before senior
Logan Heflebower hit a 2-RBI homer to left field. The homerun was the first of the 2019 season for Heflebower. Later in the same frame, the Mavericks' left fielder committed an error to allow freshman
Ben Kittay and junior
Kennedy Phillips to come around and score the last two runs of the inning.
The RU lead did not last long as CMU tallied six runs on five hits in the third and fourth inning, taking a 4-8 advantage. Regis managed to pull themselves back within one, 7-8, with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning. Zimmerman pushed all three runs home, sending a three-run shot to left field to score himself along with seniors
Connor Rochon and
Mickey Meinhofer.
The Rangers managed two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but only after the Mavericks had already added six to their total in the seventh and four more in the top of the eighth.
CMU took game three of the series, 18-9.
Game Notes | Game One: RU was outhit 16-12 in a game that two Regis batters, sophomore
Marcus Salvato (3-5, 3 RBI) and Phillips (3-4), accounted for three hits apiece.
The Rangers committed three errors in the game compared to the Mavericks' one. Freshman
Justin Kleinsorge (0-4) was given the loss after four complete innings of work. He allowed eight runs on five hits while striking out three batters.
How It Happened | Game Two: The score-line of game two does not do RU justice for how well they battled against the No. 2 team in the nation. Regis found themselves trailing by four, 0-4, going into the fifth inning.
After putting up a goose egg in the top of the inning, the Rangers scored two runs in the bottom frame, pulling them within two, 2-4. After the two runs scored, Rochon drew a walk, loading the bases and putting the go-ahead run on base with just one out. However, the next batter out grounded into a double play and the Mavericks escaped the inning after surrendering just two runs.
CMU put the cap on the game in the top of the sixth inning, scoring eight runs on eight hits, two errors and a walk. The Mavericks left with a 2-12 win in game two.
Game Notes | Game Two: Freshman
Miguel Marquez, the designated hitter in game two, lead RU with two hits. He went 2-for-3 officially with one run and one stolen base. Regis was outhit 6-17.
Freshman
Brayden Brooks (1-1) was given his first career loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out five batters.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will travel to Pueblo, Colorado next weekend to take on the Colorado State University-Pueblo Thunderwolves in a four-game series set to begin with a nine-inning game on Friday, March 15 at 6 p.m.
