PUEBLO, Colo. – Coming off a rough opening weekend of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play, the Regis University baseball team (5-13, 0-5 RMAC) fell short in a comeback attempt against Colorado State University-Pueblo (8-9, 3-2 RMAC). The ThunderWolves claimed game one 8-10 on Friday night.
How It Happened: The Rangers were pitted against last week's RMAC Pitcher of the Week, Beau Brieske, and the rest of the ThunderWolves pitching staff who collectively lead the conference in strikeouts.
The game tilted early in favor of CSU-P as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. However, senior pitcher
Chris Isbell delivered three-straight scoreless innings to keep RU in the game.
Seven of the first nine Regis batters were retired on strikes, but freshman
Miguel Marquez kickstarted the Rangers offense in the fourth inning, leading to two RU runs. As the lead-off batter, he provided just the second Regis hit of the day. Senior
Logan Heflebower tallied an RBI by sending Marquez home on a fielder's choice. Heflebower later came around to score and pull the Rangers within one, 2-3, when sophomore
Thomas Alexander hit an RBI-single to right-center.
RU knotted the game at three apiece in the very next inning. After the first two Regis batters were retired on strikes, senior
Connor Rochon reached base via an infield single. He came around to tie the game when junior
Coby Zimmerman hit an RBI-double down the right field line. Regis was 90-feet from taking the lead, but Zimmerman was left stranded at third base.
The ThunderWolves scored six unanswered runs to take a commanding 9-3 advantage after six complete innings. The Rangers, who allowed four runs in the bottom of the sixth, answered strongly with four runs of their own in the seventh inning. Following the seventh inning stretch, each team added one more run to their total.
Game Notes: Four RU batters managed two hits against the ThunderWolves pitching staff. Zimmerman (2-4) lead Regis with two doubles, two RBI's and one run. Sophomore
Marcus Salvato (2-5), Rochon (2-5, 1 RBI) and Alexander (2-4, 2 RBI) were the other three Rangers with multiple hits. RU totaled 12 hits compared to 15 for CSU-P.
Isbell (0-1) was given his first loss of the season after pitching 4.1 innings on Friday. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck-out two batters.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will play a doubleheader against the ThunderWolves tomorrow, March 16 beginning at 1 p.m.
