PUEBLO, Colo. – Freshman
Brayden Brooks pitched the Regis University baseball team (6-14, 1-6 RMAC) to their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season in Saturday's nightcap. Brooks (2-1) pitched a complete game shutout, leading the Rangers to an 11-0 win in game two of the doubleheader. RU fell 2-4 in game one, splitting the doubleheader against Colorado State University-Pueblo (9-10, 4-3 RMAC).
How It Happened | Game One: Both teams placed one runner in scoring position in the first two innings, but it was Regis that took the first strike with two runs in the third inning.
The first two Rangers due-up in the third were retired in order, but sophomore
Andy Beyene brought the offense to life, getting on board via a base-knock to right field. He came around to score the first run of the game thanks to an RBI-triple down the left field line off by senior
Connor Rochon. Junior
Coby Zimmerman then hit an RBI-single to the ThunderWolves shortstop to extend the RU lead to 2-0.
Regis was unable to defend their lead as CSU-P tied the game at two in the third inning before adding one more in the fourth and fifth inning. The Rangers were not able to respond offensively, recording just two more hits in the final four innings. The ThunderWolves took game two of the four-game series 2-4.
Game Notes | Game One: Rochon, the designated hitter, was the only RU batter to record multiple hits. He went 2-for-3 including a triple, an RBI and a run. Four other Regis players went 1-for-3 in the batters' box to tally six total team hits. The ThunderWolves also recorded six hits.
Sophomore
Colin King (0-3) pitched three complete innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out one CSU-P batter.
How It Happened | Game Two: The Rangers opened game two the same way they did game one. The only difference, however, is the way they finished. RU did not let off the accelerator after scoring two runs in the first inning. Instead, they added nine runs to their total and played strong defensively to earn their second shutout win of the season, 11-0.
Brooks guided Regis to their first conference win in his first career complete game. He allowed seven hits against 26 batters and struck out four in seven innings of work. The Rangers' defense did not commit an error for the second time this year.
RU scored two runs in the fourth and fifth inning before adding four in the sixth and one in the seventh. They tallied double digit scoring for the second time this season. Regis scored nine runs on 11 hits in the last four innings.
Game Notes | Game Two: Rochon (2-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) lead the Rangers to nine total RBI, enough to tie their season-high. He was one of the four RU batters to collect two hits in the game. Zimmerman (2-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI), Alexander (2-4, 1 3B) and sophomore
Thomas Alexander (2-4, 1 3B) were the other three with more than one hit. Regis outhit the ThunderWolves for the first time in the series, 13-7.
