Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Vanek helps No. 9 Rangers prevail against No. 11 Spartans in overtime

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 9 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (3-0) faced their toughest battle of the season, prevailing 20-19 in overtime against the No. 11 ranked University of Tampa Spartans (3-2) on Friday afternoon.

How It Happened: Regis won the game in overtime when junior Ali Vanek drove to the net and fired her shot passed the Spartan's goalkeeper. This came after Tampa won the opening draw control of the overtime period.

After the Spartans won possession of the draw control, the Rangers were forced to lock-down on defense. A few passes led to the ball being possessed behind the goal by Tampa, who were looking to find the sudden death goal in overtime. Sophomore goalkeeper Elle Crawford was defending her net when she saw the opportunity and reached her stick up to intercept an attacking pass to the front of the net.

This interception created all the momentum the team would need on their next offensive possession. After the ball reached the Regis offensive zone, the ball found Vanek who had been fairly quiet on the day with only one goal. Vanek took the ball on the far side of the field, driving across the face of the defense until she had an opening at goal. The junior sprung forward and unleashed a shot that ripped past the goalkeeper and won the game for the Rangers. It was any team's game at the end of a back-and-forth battle, but it was RU that flexed their resiliency in the final moments.

Game Notes:Senior Sarah Myres continues her hot streak of play, posting nine points (6 G, 3 A) and a career-high 11 draw controls in the game. Sophomore Kyleigh Peoples matched her career-high with four assists, adding five draw controls as well. This was the fourth time in Peoples' career where she has secured four assists in a game.

Senior Wendy Donier notched four goals in the game, and sophomore Elle Crawford improved to 3-0 between the pipes this season. Crawford made 11 saves in 62:07 as the netminder. The Rangers were outshot 37-32 in the game, but they won the battle for ground balls 19-18. The game was very evenly matched across the board, but in the end RU made the most critical play when the game was on the line, leading them to victory.

Up Next for the Rangers:The No. 9 ranked women's lacrosse team will go toe-to-toe with Grand Valley State University on Friday, March 8 at 1 p.m. on the Regis Lacrosse Field.
