Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Crawford comes up big in No. 9 Rangers' 15-12 win over No. 15 Lakers

DENVER, Colo. – In another "home away from home" game, the No. 9 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (4-0) defeated the No. 15 ranked Grand Valley State University Lakers (3-2) 15-12 on Friday afternoon.

How It Happened: Regis was pitted with another top-15 matchup this week and the ladies stepped up to the challenge. Sophomore Elle Crawford was one of the players that had a massive impact on the game as she saved 17 shots in the game, one-shy of matching her career-high from last season. The defense also stepped up when they needed to, as they thwarted a lot of offensive opportunities for the Lakers to the tune of 17 caused turnovers.

The first half featured a gritty matchup between the two teams, and after 30 minutes of play GVSU held a 7-5 lead. The Lakers offense outshot the Rangers' 22-10 in the first half, with Crawford saving 11 of them. The second half was a different story for the offense.

RU came out and scored four of the first five goals to take a 9-8 lead early in the second half when junior Andrea Macalalad netted her second-straight goal at the 18:32 mark. Grand Valley knotted it back up at nine goals apiece, but then senior Sarah Myres put Regis back on top 10-9 and sophomore Kyleigh Peoples tallied back-to-back goals to extend the lead to three goals 12-9 with 7:06 remaining in the game.

The teams traded goals for the remainder of the game with the final Rangers' goal coming by way of junior Ali Vanek with 2:01 remaining in the game. A critical interception from Crawford with 1:11 on the clock all but sealed the game for RU who held possession for the remaining time, leaving with the 15-12 win over another top-15 ranked opponent.

Game Notes: Peoples (7 pts, 4 G, 3 A 2 GB, 6 DC, 1 CT) had her best game of the season, racking up a game and season-high seven points in the win. Myres (5 G, 1 A, 1 GB, 8 DC, 1 CT) continues to play well as she led all scorers with five goals. Macalalad chipped in with three goals on the day and Vanek finished with two goals and two assists.

Defensively, Crawford stole the show with 17 saves, but it was sophomore Sarah Kate Dhom (6 CT, 2 GB) senior Lauren Hurd (2 CT, 2 GB), freshman Lucy Johnson (2 CT, 4 GB) and freshman Maya Quigley (1 CT, 7 GB) who all stepped up and forced their opponents into turnovers. Quigley's seven ground balls set a career-high for the freshman.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 9 ranked Regis women's lacrosse team will hit the road for their next two games, traveling to Ohio for matchups with the University of Findlay on Thursday, March 14 at 1 p.m. and then to Tiffin University for a game at 9 a.m.
