FINDLAY, Ohio – On a very rainy Thursday afternoon in Ohio, the No. 8 ranked Regis Univeristy women's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 with a 17-13 win over the University of Findlay (2-6).
How It Happened: Regis found themselves in a 3-0 hole in the first five minutes of the contest. With the visitor's coming out firing, the Rangers were forced to adjust and respond quickly. Fortunately, junior
Ali Vanek got RU on the board when sophomore
Kyleigh Peoples found her on a cut to the net. Vanek's goal gave Regis their first goal and led to a 3-0 run for the Rangers, who knotted the game at three goals apiece at the 11:30 mark of the opening half. Both teams finished the first half with five goals and they remained tied heading into halftime.
After halftime, RU found a rhythm in their offense as they went on to score five unanswered goals to begin the second half, opening a 10-5 lead. However, the Oilers did not back down, putting together a four-goal run of their own to cut the Regis lead to one goal, 11-10, midway through the half.
Seniors
Wendy Donier and
Sarah Myres scored back-to-back goals to give the Rangers a 13-10 cushion, but Findlay kept coming back. With a 14-12 lead, Vanek netted her fifth goal of the match and Myres slotted home two-straight to pull ahead 17-12 with only 2:14 remaining in the game. The Oilers scored once more with 12 seconds left, but the game came to a close with RU capturing their fifth-straight win, 17-13.
Game Notes: Myres, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) leader in points, posted a game-high seven points in the win, scoring six goals and adding one assist. She also snagged nine draw controls and two ground balls, and caused one turnover. Vanek had her best game of the season thus far with six points coming on five goals and one assist, also scooping up two ground balls and adding one caused turnover.
