Rangers Earn Doubleheader Split against UCCS

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (12-24, 7-16 RMAC) split Saturday's doubleheader against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (22-12, 14-9 RMAC) on the Regis Baseball Field. Sophomore Andy Beyene scored a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Regis a 3-2 game one victory. The Mountain Lions went on to take game two 8-2.

How It Happened | Game One: UCCS scored early with one run in the first inning but the Rangers buckled-down and kept the Mountain Lions at bay through the next five innings.

The score remained 0-1 in favor of the away team until RU evened the game at one with one run in the bottom of the fourth. Redshirt senior Connor Rochon singled to right field to begin the inning and made his way to second base when junior Coby Zimmerman was walked. Both runners moved into scoring position when redshirt senior Logan Heflebower laid down a successful sacrifice-bunt. Freshman Jacob Barr put the ball in play to send Rochon across home plate to tie the game at one.

Regis later took the lead with another run in the sixth inning. The Rangers tallied three hits in the frame with the first one coming off the bat of junior Ryan Tierney. Much like the fourth inning, the second batter up drew a walk to place two runners on base with zero outs. Zimmerman, the next batter up, sent a hard-hit ball directly back to the pitcher, but the Mountain Lions' hurler could do nothing but knock the pitch down as Zimmerman loaded the bases. A Heflebower base-knock resulted in an RBI and a 2-1 Ranger advantage.

The game had extra-inning potential when the Mountain Lions tied the game at two with one run in the seventh inning, but RU had different plans. In the bottom of the inning, junior Kennedy Phillips recorded his first hit of the series, hitting a one-out double to left-center and placing the game-winning run in scoring position. Sophomore Andy Beyene entered the game as a pinch-runner, replacing Phillips on second base. Beyene came around to score the game-winning run when freshman Miguel Marquez hit a walk-off single to left-field, ending the game 3-2.

Game Notes | Game One: Seven Regis batters recorded a hit in the seven-inning game. Zimmerman (2-2, 1 2B) was the only Ranger with multiple hits. Each team tallied eight total hits.

Freshman Justin Kleinsorge got the start on the mound for RU. He went four complete innings, allowing one run on six hits. Junior Cobe Karhoff (5-3) got his fifth win of the season after retiring the final two UCCS batters.

How It Happened | Game Two: The Mountain Lions scored the first run of game two in the top of the third inning. They left two runners on board and Regis got out of the inning after surrendering just one run.

The Rangers were held to just two hits and scoreless through five innings of play. UCCS extended their lead in the sixth inning, stringing together eight hits and scoring six runs to take a 0-7 advantage.

RU cut their deficit to five, 2-7, with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth before the Mountain Lions added another run of their own in the top of the seventh.

Game Notes | Game Two:
Rochon (2-3, 1 RBI) led Regis with two hits, they totaled five on the game. Freshman Brayden Brooks went 5.2 innings, punching out five batters and allowing seven runs on 13 hits.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will conclude their four-game series against UCCS with a nine-inning game set to begin at 12 p.m.
