Trailblazers Top Rangers in Series Opener

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State University (26-13, 16-9 RMAC) held the Regis University baseball team (12-26, 7-18 RMAC) hitless in seven of the nine innings in Thursday's game. Regis used three hits in the fifth inning to tie the game at three, but ended up falling short, 3-8.

How It Happened: Redshirt senior Mickey Meinhofer and junior Ryan Tierney opened the game with back-to-back singles, but the Trailblazers turned a double play and retired the side before the Rangers were able to score a run.

RU was then held hitless through the next three innings and entered the fifth inning in a 0-3 hole. Dixie State scored on a passed ball to take a 0-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning before adding two runs to their total with back-to-back, two-out, solo homeruns in the fourth inning.

Regis put up a three-spot in the fifth inning to tie the game at three. Freshman Jacob Barr singled to left field and stole second base to lead-off the inning. He scored the Rangers' first run of the game when sophomore Thomas Alexander hit an RBI-double to left field. Meinhofer grounded out to third base to allow Alexander to advance home and cut the RU deficit to 2-3. Freshman Ryan Hutchinson, who got on board via a walk, was able to tie the game when Tierney singled through the left side.

The Trailblazers regained their lead with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning. They were able to stretch their advantage to 3-5 when their base-runner stole home in the seventh inning. In the eighth inning, Dixie State sent a two-run shot over the left field fence to give them a 3-7 lead. They followed the home run with three-straight singles that led to another run and a five-point advantage.

Regis did not record a hit in the final four innings as they fell 3-8 in the series opener.

Game notes: Tierney (2-4, 1 RBI) was the only Ranger to tally multiple hits. Alexander (1-2, 1 RBI, 1 2B) hit the only extra base hit for RU.

Senior Chris Isbell (1-3) tossed the first five innings for Regis. He mowed down seven batters and allowed four runs on five hits.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will play a double-header against the Trailblazers beginning at 4 p.m. tomorrow, April 19 in St. George Utah.
