Rangers Begin Final Home Series With 9-3 Win Over Grizzlies

DENVER, Colo. –  The Regis University baseball team took down Adams State University 9-3 on Friday afternoon. The Rangers improved to 14-28 overall and 9-20 inside the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) while the Grizzlies fell to 8-35 and 5-24 in the RMAC.

How It Happened: Regis took a 5-0 advantage with their first three runs coming with two outs. In the bottom of the third inning, redshirt senior Connor Rochon hit a two-out single through the right side of the infield to reach first base. Junior Coby Zimmerman followed with a groundball to the Grizzlies' shortstop who air-mailed his throw, resulting in the Rangers' first run of the game. Zimmerman then came around to score the second run of the inning, giving RU a 2-1 lead, on an RBI-double down the left-field line by redshirt senior Logan Heflebower.

The first two batters in the bottom of the fourth inning were retired in order before freshman Miguel Marquez got on board via a walk. Marquez came around to score the first run of the inning and the third-straight Regis run when redshirt senior Mickey Meinhofer singled through the left side.

The Rangers' lead was stretched to 5-0 when the RU homerun leader, Zimmerman, sent a two-run shot over the fence in left-center. His homerun scored himself and Rochon, who walked earlier in the inning.

Adams State cut their deficit to two, 5-3, by hanging a three-spot on three hits and an error in the top of the sixth inning. Regis, however, regained a four-run lead in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out double down the left-field line from junior Ryan Tierney scoring both Meinhofer and freshman Ryan Hutchinson on the play.

The Rangers added their final two runs on one hit and two walks in the bottom of the eighth inning to take game one of the four-game series 9-3.

Game Notes: Meinhofer (2-4, 1 RBI) is the only RU batter to record multiple hits while six others tallied a single hit on their way to eight total hits. The Grizzlies also totaled eight hits. Zimmerman (1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI) hit his seventh home run of the season. Tierney (1-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI) and Heflebower (1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI) each hit a double on the day.

Senior Chris Isbell went seven complete innings in his start to improve to 2-3 on the season. Isbell allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out eight batters.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will play their last home doubleheader at 12 p.m. tomorrow, April 27th against Adams State University.
