DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (16-28, 11-20 RMAC) edged Adams State University (8-37, 5-26 RMAC) 3-2 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Regis went on the score a season-high 20 runs in game two, earning the doubleheader sweep with a 20-8 game two victory.
How It Happened | Game One: The Grizzlies turned a lead-off triple into the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Regis trailed 0-1 for just 1.5 innings before they gained the edge in the bottom of the third inning.
Sophomore
Andy Beyene reached base via an infield throwing error that allowed him to round first base and make his way into scoring position as the Grizzlies scrambled to gather the errant throw. Redshirt senior
Mickey Meinhofer followed with an RBI-double to right-field, immediately taking advantage of the Adams State error by scoring Beyene. Meinhofer came around to score on a fielders' choice to give RU their first lead of the game, 2-1.
Regis extended their advantage to 3-1 in the bottom of the next frame. A two-out single by junior
Kennedy Phillips pushed freshman
Jacob Barr home in the bottom of the fourth. Barr reached base via a walk before stealing second base.
The Rangers surrendered one more run on two hits in the top of the fifth inning. Juniors
Kendrick Catron and
Jordon Wyke came out of the bullpen to record the final two outs of the inning and escape the bases-loaded situation.
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard in the remainder of the game as RU wrapped up game one of the doubleheader 3-2.
Game Notes | Game one: Six different Regis batters recorded one hit apiece as the Rangers and Grizzlies each recorded six total hits. The only extra-base hit for RU came off the bat of Meinhofer. Meinhofer went 1-for-3 as the lead-off batter, recording a double, an RBI and a run.
Freshman
Justin Kleinsorge (1-5) picked up his first win of the season. He went 4.1 innings in his start, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four batters. Redshirt senior
Matt Heibult got his third save of the season after coming in and mowing down the final batter of the game.
How It Happened | Game Two: After both teams scored one run in the first inning, the Grizzlies used four hits and three Regis errors to score six runs in the top of the second. The Rangers, however, scored 14 unanswered runs through the next four innings. They scored two in the second, two in the third, eight in the fourth, two in the fifth and five more in the sixth.
Barr was hit by a pitch to lead-off the bottom of the second inning to begin the RU run. He and sophomore
Thomas Alexander came around to score on a double to right-center by Meinhofer. Rochon then sent a solo home run to right-center to lead-off the bottom of the third inning, cutting the deficit to 4-7. Heflebower scored the second run of the inning after recording his first triple of the season.
Regis proceeded to score eight runs in the fourth inning, taking a13-7 advantage. Their fourth inning runs came on six hits and two errors. The Rangers had 12 batters up to bat in their fourth inning outing.
The Grizzlies were on pace to hang their first goose egg of the game in the bottom of the fifth, but Regis had other plans. They added two more runs to their total after their first two batters were retired in order. The Rangers added their final five runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Game Notes | Game Two: Eight RU batters recorded a hit in game two. Rochon (4-5, 1 HR, 1 2B, 5 RBI) and Beyene (4-5, 3 RBI) each had a game-high four hits. As a team, Regis tallied 21 hits, 10 of which resulted in extra-bases.
Sophomore
Adam Hubley got his first career win after pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and zero runs. He struck out five batters.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will play their final home game of the season at 12 p.m. tomorrow, April 28. The Rangers will recognize their seniors before the start of the game.
