DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (17-28, 12-20 RMAC) had their way against Adams State University (8-38, 5-27 RMAC), outscoring them 24-4 on senior day. Their 24 runs are tied for the most runs scored in a single game in Regis baseball history and their 25 hits is tied for the second most in program history. The seven seniors combined for nine hits, nine RBI's, three home runs and eight runs.
How It Happened: The Rangers scored in the first six innings of the game. Their first six runs came in the first inning and never looked back. The scoring plethora began when redshirt senior
Connor Rochon hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the first. Later in the same inning, junior
Kennedy Phillips cleared the right-field fence to record the second Regis grand slam of the season, making the score 6-1.
In the second inning, junior
Ryan Tierney hit an infield single before coming around to score on an RBI-double to left field off the bat of junior
Coby Zimmerman. The Grizzlies then scored three runs on three hits in the top of the third to pull within three, 7-4. Phillips, however, then tallied his second home run of the game in the bottom of the inning, making the score 8-4.
The Rangers proceeded to hang a nine-spot in the fourth inning, proving to be their biggest frame and leading to a 14-4 advantage. RU used two doubles, four singles, two wild pitches and a three-run home run to score their nine runs. Phillips, after going yard in his first two at-bats, was intentionally walked in the innings. Rochon recorded his second homer of the game with two outs in the inning.
Regis followed their huge fourth inning with another explosive inning in the fifth. Redshirt senior
Mickey Meinhofer tallied his first career home run in the inning. His home run over the left field wall resulted in three runs. The Rangers last run of the inning was walked in.
Rochon doubled to left center in the sixth inning, sending sophomore
Andy Beyene home to score the last run of the game for RU. Beyene got on base with a single through the left side of the infield.
Game notes: Regis recorded 25 hits, tied for the second most in a single game in Regis baseball history. Meinhofer (4-7, 1 HR, 1 2B, 3 RBI), Rochon (4-6, 2 HR, 1 2B, 6 RBI) and Tierney (4-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI) all recorded a game-high four hits. Phillips (3-4, 2 HR, 1 2B, 6 RBI) recorded a grand slam to go along with his two other hits.
Sophomore
Colin King (2-4) got his second win of the season after going five complete innings. He allowed four runs on five hits while striking out eight batters, his single game career high.
Three senior pitchers;
John Flint,
Victor Sanchez and
Matt Heibult all pitched an inning of relief. The Rangers fourth senior Pitcher, Chirs Isbell, got into the game as a pinch hitter.
