ALLENDALE, Mich. – The unprecedented 2019 Regis University women's lacrosse season has come to an end in the semifinal round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women's Lacrosse Championship.
This marks the second-consecutive season in which the team has reached the semifinal round, but unfortunately their matchup was unfavorable, and No. 1 seeded Regis (20-1) fell 17-10 to the No. 4 seed Adelphi University on Friday afternoon.
How It Happened:The Rangers won the opening draw control and both teams began to battle. Junior
Ali Vanek took a pass from senior
Wendy Donier and netted the games' first goal with a laser into the top left corner of the net. After the goal, Adelphi went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead around the mid-point of the first half.
RU tried to capitalize on their opportunities, but the Panther defense forced a lot of difficult passes and they were able to cause multiple Regis turnovers. Adelphi's offense was on-point in the first half, fitting a lot of passes into tight windows in the offensive zone, leading to difficult save opportunities for sophomore
Elle Crawford.
At halftime, the Rangers found themselves behind 11-4, leaving them with a big hole to climb out of in the second half. Anyone who has seen RU play this season knows that the team did not look like the 20-0 Regis team they have seen all season. However, that team found their way back onto the field to open the second half as they rattled off four-straight goals to cut the lead to three goals, 8-11 with more than enough time to complete their comeback attempt.
After Vanek scored the eighth goal for the Rangers, the Panthers stopped the run with their first goal of the second half, which also started a 3-0 run for Adelphi who once again extended their lead. RU had a couple opportunities late in the game, eventually scoring two more goals, but the Panthers managed to keep their lead, and when the horn sounded Regis lost the game 17-10 for their first and only loss of the season.
Game Notes: Vanek led all players with five goals in the game and Myres netted three with senior
Sarah Lugo and sophomore
Kyleigh Peoples both recording one goal apiece. Senior
Wendy Donier, Peoples and Lugo each tallied one assist. Junior
Jessica Berg was, once again, fantastic defensively and on the draw circle causing a team-high two turnovers while chasing down and corralling six ground balls. Sophomore
Sarah Kate Dhom had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Despite what the scoreboard read at the end of the game, sophomore
Elle Crawford played a remarkable game in between the pipes for RU, even recording her first career assist on full-field pass to Vanek in the second half. She made nine saves against one of the nation's top-teams, facing 26 shots on goal in the game, and 35 overall. Additionally, she registered four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
This team accomplished many different milestones this season, most impressively winning a school-record 20-straight games, and reaching the highest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) ranking in program history at No. 2.
Up Next for the Rangers:This may be the end of the 2019 season, but this season hopes to serve as another indication of just how strong the Regis University women's lacrosse team has become on a national level. The team graduates seven seniors and will face the difficult task of replacing a variety of skilled positions for the 2020 season. The young core of Rangers that are set to return are sure to step-up and fill the shoes left behind by this remarkable group.
