RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Regis University men's soccer team traveled to South Dakota School of Mines for its opening road match in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play this season and came away with a powerful 4-0 shutout win over the Hardrockers at Sioux Park Stadium on Sunday.
"We're obviously happy with the result today," said assistant coach
Taylor Diem. "Coming up here, it's always a difficult place to play, but the boys came out and set the tone from the start. We still have some things to work on, but I thought overall we controlled the game, limited their ability to play, and scored a few good goals.
"With 17 chances on-frame, we would have liked to put a few more in the back of the net, but we're happy to be 2-0 in RMAC play as we head into next weekend."
How It Happened: Junior forward
Parker Klein put the Rangers up on the board in the 19th minute, scoring an unassisted goal to give Regis a 1-0 lead. As it turned out, the Rangers didn't need any more points after that. However, that didn't matter to RU.
Just over six minutes later at the 24:40 mark, freshman forward
Pascal von Matthey found junior forward
Jean Carre, who pounded the ball into the goalbox for the Rangers' first insurance goal of the game to give them a 2-0 advantage.
Regis picked up right where it left off in the second half. Senior midfielder
Porter Milner found an open Klein, who found the back of the net and brought the score to 3-0 in the 48th minute.
RU last added to its score tally, 4-0, in the 71st minute with von Matthey scoring on an unassisted goal. The defense took care of the rest for the remaining 19 minutes of play to earn their second shutout of the season.
The Rangers controlled every aspect of this game, outshooting the Hardrockers, 30-8, for the game. This tally included an impressive 23-3 margin in the first half. Regis also dominated in shots-on-goal, 17-4, over the 90 minutes.
Game Notes: Klein (2 G, 2 S, 2 SOG) closed out the weekend with the team-high in goals. von Matthey (1 G, 1 A, 8 S, 5 SOG) contributed to RU's second and fourth goals of the day. Carre (1 G, 4 S, 2 SOG) gave the Rangers their first of three insurance goals. Milner (1 A, 2 S) recorded his first assist of the season. Sophomore forward
Kristian Hooker (2 S, 2 SOG) and freshman midfielder
Kai Beckschulte (2 S, 2 SOG) both had each of their two shot attempts on-target. Junior goalkeeper
Tim Dolan walked away with his second shutout of the year.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis improves to a 3-2-1 overall record and a 2-0-0 record in RMAC play. RU returns home to host Dixie State (2-3-1, 1-1-0 RMAC) at Regis Match Pitch on Friday at 3 p.m.
