DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team suffered its first loss in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play as the result of a 2-1 defeat from Dixie State at Regis Match Pitch on Friday, ending a three-game winning streak.
"Obviously, we are disappointed to have not gotten a result today," said coach
Tony McCall. "I thought we should have been 2-3 goals to the better of Dixie at halftime, but when you let good teams hang around, they will ultimately hurt you in the end.
"We are now far enough into the season where this young group that we have need to find the grit and toughness to see games out. We are making it very difficult on ourselves, but as a staff, we are excited with the group of players and where we are going."
How It Happened: With the score tied in the 52nd minute, 1-1, Trailblazers sophomore midfielder Raul Ruiz passed the ball from midfield to freshman forward John Joseph, who shot the ball out of the reach of junior goalkeeper
Tim Dolan's leftward diving motion to give DSU a 2-1 advantage and the eventual game-winner.
Junior forward
Parker Klein gave the Rangers an early 1-0 lead just 1:56 into the game. Junior forward
Jean Carre found Klein on the left side of the box with Klein finishing past redshirt senior goalkeeper Zach Nielson for the empty-net goal.
Dixie State evened the score in the 15th minute. Sophomore defender Matt Lockwood punted a long ball from the backline behind the Regis defense. Freshman midfielder Logan Beus received the ball and proceeded to score to tie the score, 1-1, which was the score going into the intermission.
RU proved to be the aggressor for the majority of the game, outshooting the Trailblazers, 17-10, for the game, although the Rangers were outshot, 7-6, in the second half. For the game, Regis had an 8-6 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Game Notes: Klein (1 G, 3 S, 2 SOG) extended his team-high in goals for the season. Carre (1 A, 2 S, 2 SOG) was credited with Regis' only assist and had both of his shot attempts on-target. Freshman forward
Anthony Priest (1 S, 1 SOG) and sophomore forward
Kristian Hooker (1 S, 1 SOG) both had an attempt that was on-target.
Up Next for the Rangers: RU falls to a 3-3-1 record overall and a 2-1-0 record in RMAC play. The Rangers now host a formidable Westminster (Utah) (5-2-0, 3-0-0 RMAC) on Sunday at noon.
Though Regis isn't undefeated in conference play anymore for the season, McCall wants his team to put the past in the past.
"Now we need to dust ourselves off and move onto focusing in on Sunday's opponent," McCall said.
