DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team fought hard in its Sunday home match against Westminster (Utah), but a second-half goal proved costly in the Rangers' 1-0 loss at Regis Match Pitch.
"Same story, different day," said coach
Tony McCall. "Again, I felt we had the majority of the play, didn't create as many opportunities as we probably have in the last few games, but we still like the way our group is. We're not getting on the right side of these one-nil defeats of games, and I think once we figure it out, once we work out the kinks here, which we need to do pretty quickly, I think we'll be very dangerous.
"So, no panic. It's just one of those things where, again, we've got a younger group, we're still working things out, but we like what we have, we like the process that we're in, and it's just one of those things."
How It Happened: Griffins redshirt freshman defender Skyler Kjellander fed a cross from the left side of the field to senior forward Danny Darelli, who headed the ball low into the left corner for the Regis 1-0 deficit in the 81st minute. It proved to be the game-winner for Westminster.
RU played deep in WC territory and came close to taking a lead of its own in the 79th minute when freshman forward
Pascal von Matthey kicked a bullet shot into the lower-left corner of the net, but redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Will Desantis was right in the shot's path for his second of two saves on the day.
The first half was a different story as the Rangers and Griffins engaged in a defensive see-saw battle of scoreless soccer with the teams shooting four and five shots, respectively, in the opening 45 minutes.
Freshman forward
Anthony Priest had Regis' lone shot-on-goal in the first half when he attempted an on-target shot to the bottom-right corner. However, it was saved by Desantis.
RU was outshot, 11-6, for the match which included a 4-2 shot-on-goal deficit.
Game Notes: von Matthey (1 S, 1 SOG) and Priest (1 S, 1 SOG) both made accurate shots that were saved by Desantis. Junior goalkeeper
Tim Dolan (3 SV) recorded three saves in the loss.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers fall to a 3-4-1 record overall and a 2-2-0 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Regis will next take to the road to face Adams State (0-5-1, 0-3-1 RMAC) at ASU Soccer Field on Friday at 3 p.m.
At this crucial point in the season, the goal of McCall's team is simple.
"We're going to try and win two games," McCall said. "I think that both opponents are going to throw out their own challenges to us, and it's like everything else. We have to go out and work harder, beat them, try and score a couple goals, and go from there and try and get a couple wins under our belt."
