PORTLAND, Ore. – The Regis University men's soccer team concluded its season-opening road trip with a tough 3-1 defeat from Concordia (Ore.) at Tuominen Yard on Saturday.
Â
How It Happened:Â Freshman forward
Pascal von Matthey seized an opportunity less than a minute into the second half in which he ran a long stretch down the left side of the field before finishing with a shot in the box off his right foot that gave the Rangers a 1-0 advantage.
Â
In the 62nd minute, however, the Cavaliers evened the score, 1-1, when junior defender Brandon McCurtain shot a cross from the right corner that was then received in the left post by junior forward Oscar Rosas, who then volleyed a shot into the back of the net.
Â
Junior forward Paul Seydel proved instrumental for CUP in both the Cavaliers' go-ahead and insurance goals in the 83rd and 86th minutes, respectively, and it was too much for RU to overcome.
Â
Seydel directed the ball to sophomore midfielder Nicholas Denley, who then crossed the ball while on the right side with a low finish into the box. This put the Rangers into a 2-1 deficit, which was all the Cavaliers needed.
Â
The insurance goal occurred at the 85:39 mark when Seydel's cross from the right slipped through junior goalkeeper
Tim Dolan's grasp and was headed in by senior forward Kieran McMinn, doubling the RU deficit to 3-1.
Â
The opening 45 minutes ended with no score but proved to be a teaser for the offensive aggression the Rangers would put on in the second half. While Regis outshot CUP, 4-3, in the first half, RU was clearly the aggressor in the second half with a decisive shot tally of 12-5.
Â
Nevertheless, almost all of the second-half shots for the Rangers did not go in whereas most of the Cavaliers' shots did.
Â
Game Notes: von Matthey (1 G, 4 S, 2 SOG) was credited in giving Regis its brief second-half lead. Sophomore midfielder
Ben Shepherd (4 S, 1 SOG) matched von Matthey for the game-high in shots. Sophomore forward
Kristian Hooker (1 S, 1 SOG) was efficient in his offensive aggression as he was in the match for only 30 minutes. Senior midfielder
Luca Kother (2 S) played the entire 90 minutes.
Up Next for the Rangers:Â RU, which dropped to a 0-1-1 overall record, returns to Denver for its home opener against Metropolitan State University of Denver (0-1-0) on Friday at Regis Match Pitch. The kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
