Rangers split contests against two Oklahoma opponents

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Warmer temperatures greeted the Regis softball team that opened up the Midwestern State University Texas tournament with a doubleheader split between Northwestern Oklahoma State and Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Regis leaned on its offense to top NWOSU in the first game of the day, but couldn't rally to defeat SWOSU in the second game of the day.

Northwestern Oklahoma State | How it Happened: Taylor Armitage drove in two runs and earned the save, while a bases-clearing double from Carly Beard provided the big hit for the Rangers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Beard's double to right center, scored Laura Scheffel and Jessi Case and gave the Rangers a 10-5 victory.

Case scored three times for the Rangers and Shayelyn Allen scored twice and plated a run. Beard had three RBIs, including a bases loaded walk in a five-run first inning for Regis.

In addition to her two hits, Armitage came on to pitch two innings in relief to earn her second save of the season.

The Rangers snuck out a 5-0 lead in the first inning scoring twice on five consecutive walks before recording an out. Armitage punched a run home with a single to the shortstop, and a single to right field off the bat of Madison Flores roped a two-run double to push the RU lead to 5-2.

Regis head coach Nicole Thompson opted for a safety squeeze in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the Rangers' lead to two. Scheffel's perfectly executed bunt allowed Case to scurry home from third.

Armitage came through with her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth to push the Rangers to a 7-4 advantage.

Rodeheaver (2-2) started in the circle for the Rangers and lasted five-plus innings, striking out one, and walking two. She was lifted for Armitage in the top of the sixth after the Rangers bounced back with a run.

Scheffel slashed a run-scoring single making way for Beard's bases-clearing double that capped the RU scoring.

The Rangers turned two double plays defensively to suffocate any rally attempt, including a 6-4-3 double play to snuff out a seventh-inning rally.

Game Notes: The Rangers have scored five or more runs in the first inning twice this year… RU turned two doubles defensively… The Rangers posted seven total walks in the game… Regis went 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position… Case also posted her first triple of the season… Four Rangers had two or more RBI.

Southwestern Oklahoma State | How it Happened: RU dropped the second game of the day as a seven-run third inning went against the Rangers, who lost 10-4.

Flores led the Rangers driving in two and recording three walks in the contest. Beard and Gray plated the other two runs for RU.

Regis battled back after falling behind in the third but could not overcome the deficit. Beard punched an RBI single in a three-run third inning, capped by Flores double that scored two.

The Rangers had opportunities to score throughout the game, but could not get the key hit and left 12 runners on base.

Armitage, who earned the save in the first game of the day, started for the Regis and went three innings allowing eight runs. Abby Covington pitched four innings in her first appearance of the weekend and struck out five.

Southwestern Oklahoma's seven-run third inning was capped by a grand slam.

Game Notes: Allen had two hits to lead the Rangers… Flores recorded three walks and was one of three Rangers with two or more walks… RU was issued 10 walks. This game was the fourth Oklahoma opponent for RU.

Up Next For The Rangers: Regis has a quick turnaround as it faces Cameron and host-school Midwestern State University Texas to close out the tournament. First pitch is scheduled at 10 a.m. for Cameron and noon for Midwestern State.
