Box Score LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Regis University baseball team ignited the offense once again and hit the 10-run mark for the third straight game while in the process defeating Washburn, 10-2, at Lawrence High School on Friday to open a four-game series.
Â
How It Happened:Â With the Rangers holding a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, junior outfielder
Kyle Koontz hit a two-RBI single, which scored junior catcher
JT Stanley and freshman infielder
Austin Vaught from third and second, respectively. Stanley reached on an error, and Vaught doubled. Koontz's hit grew the lead to 3-0. That was all Regis would need for the rest of the contest.
Â
With redshirt freshman infielder
Colten Chase on third after reaching on an error and Koontz at second after a steal, freshman infielder
Matt Marlow singled through the left side to bring home Chase and Koontz. More importantly, it gave RU a commanding 5-0 lead.
Â
Marlow later scored an unearned run, 6-0, after stealing third and advancing to home on an error by the catcher.
Â
The runs kept coming for the Rangers in the seventh and eighth. In the seventh, Koontz singled to left field, and this scored Vaught from third, who tripled to center, and Chase, who singled and later stole second. These runs brought the Regis lead to 8-0.
Â
Junior infielder
Marcus Salvato contributed RU's last two-RBI single in the eighth, going to left field. Junior infielder
Brevin Owen and junior outfielder
Andy Beyene both scored on the play to bring the Rangers' lead to a decisive 10-0. Owen reached first base and went to second after striking out, while Beyene walked.Â
Â
The Ichabods ended the shutout in the bottom half of the eighth when redshirt sophomore outfielder Cole Emerson reached home on a passed ball. Emerson walked to start the inning.
Â
Washburn shrank its deficit to 10-2 in the bottom of the ninth when sophomore infielder Chance Ragsdale hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing junior infielder Cale Hlavac to tag and score from third. Hlavac singled up the middle to get on base.
Â
Regis broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the fourth when Marlow doubled to center field, and this allowed Salvato to score from second for the 1-0 advantage. Salvato singled down the left-field line to start the inning and stole second.
