IRVINE, Calif. – The Regis University baseball team commenced its 2020 season with a 10-2 loss to Concordia University Irvine at Eagles Field on Friday.
Â
How It Happened:Â The Rangers and Eagles were tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth. However, with Concordia freshman outfielder Shane Schick on third, senior catcher Tony Garcia III knocked a sacrifice fly to right field, which was far enough for Schick to cross home plate for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run. Schick reached base on a single.
Â
Senior infielder Cooper Moore added insurance to the CUI lead in the fifth, drilling a solo homer to left center and gave CUI a 4-2 advantage. This proceeded to kick off a six-run fifth for the Eagles.
Â
The scoring in the fifth finally stopped after freshman infielder Derek Delgado scored from second on senior outfielder/pitcher Matt Lautz's single down the right-field line to give Concordia a commanding 9-2 lead.
Â
CUI tacked one more run in the eighth when senior first baseman/outfielder Bailey Collins scored an unearned run after reaching base on a walk and stealing second. Collins came home on Schick's mishandled hit to right field and made the score, 10-2.
Â
The teams were stuck in a scoreless tie through the first three innings. With Regis junior catcher
Roger Riley at second base, senior outfielder
Coby Zimmerman broke the 0-0 score with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth.
Â
The home run proceeded to awaken the Eagles from their offensive slumber because in the bottom half of the inning, Moore cut the RU lead in half, 2-1, on a solo shot to right center.
Â
A bunt single to third by Collins followed. Collins later scored an unearned run after Schick's single to tie the game at 2-2.
Â
Game Notes:Â Zimmerman (1 H, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI) claimed the Rangers' only home run of the game. Riley (1 R, 2 BB) reached base twice during the game. Junior infielder
Brevin Owen (1 H, 1 2B) claimed Regis's only other hit. Junior pitcher
Colin King (0-1) pitched 4.1 innings allowing seven hits and four runs (two earned) while walking two and striking out five in the loss.
Â
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis begins the 2020 campaign with an 0-1 record overall. RU will continue its series against the Eagles by playing a Saturday doubleheader with a first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. MT. Â
