Regis swept in doubleheader at No. 7 Colorado Mesa

Rangers get on the board in both games against the nationally ranked Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team vied to even its road series at No. 7 Colorado Mesa on Saturday but ended up at the wrong end of the score in both games at Suplizio Field, losing the doubleheader opener and closer by respective scores of 3-2 and 6-2.

Game 1 | How It Happened: The Rangers were locked up in a 2-2 tie with the Mavericks in the bottom of the eighth of a seven-inning doubleheader opener. However, junior catcher Spencer Bramwell singled through the left side to give Colorado Mesa a 3-2 win when junior infielder Caleb Farmer scored from second on the hit. Farmer made it to first on a throwing error before reaching second on a wild pitch.

Regis did get an early 1-0 lead in the first when junior outfielder Kyle Koontz scored from third on freshman infielder Matt Marlow's RBI double-play at-bat. Koontz walked to start the game.

CMU tied the game, 1-1, in the fifth when freshman infielder/pitcher Jonathan Gonzalez singled up the middle to bring home junior infielder Chase Hamilton from third. Hamilton singled through the right side, stole second, and reached third on a passed ball.

RU took back the lead, 2-1, in the sixth on redshirt sophomore outfielder McKay Banks's RBI double to shortstop, allowing redshirt freshman infielder Colten Chase to score the go-ahead run. Chase started the sixth off by reaching first on a throwing error and advanced to second.

The Mavericks deadlocked the contest again in the bottom half of the sixth, 2-2. Following a walk to Farmer, Colorado Mesa sophomore catcher Haydn McGeary knocked an RBI double to left center, which brought McGeary across home plate for CMU's tying run.

Game Notes: Banks went 2-for-4 with the bat, including a double, and had an RBI. Koontz scored a run and walked once, while Chase went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Marlow finished with a 1-for-4 performance and stole a base. Junior pitcher Adam Hubley registered 6.0 innings on the bump, allowing two runs, four hits, and three walks, while striking out two.

Game 2 | How It Happened: The Mavericks scored all the runs they needed on Farmer's three-run home run to left center in the bottom of the second, scoring junior infielder Jordan Stubbings from second and junior outfielder Matthew Turner from first, for a 3-0 lead. Stubbings singled to left to open the inning before Turner was hit by a pitch.

The Rangers came within a run, 3-2, in the top of the third when Koontz hit a home run to left field with Chase on first. Chase singled to right in the previous at-bat.

A groundout to shortstop from senior outfielder Tyler Parker resulted in an RBI that scored Farmer from third for a Colorado Mesa 4-2 advantage.

Junior outfielder Matt Cassin advanced to third on Parker's RBI groundout and proceeded to score on a wild pitch, increasing CMU's lead to 5-2.

The Mavericks added another insurance run in the sixth, 6-2, when sophomore infielder Conrad Villafuerte's RBI double to shortstop scored Stubbings, who walked to start the inning, from third.

Game Notes: Marlow went 2-for-3 at the plate, making him the only Regis player with multiple hits in the game. Koontz had a 1-for-3 game at the plate, which included his home run and resulted in a run scored as well as an RBI. Chase contributed a 1-for-2 showing with the bat and scored a run. Junior pitcher Colin King (1-4) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five runs and five hits while striking out two.

Up Next for the Rangers: RU falls to an 8-9 record overall and an 0-3 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. The Rangers conclude their four-game series against Colorado Mesa (13-4, 3-0 RMAC) at Suplizio Field on Sunday at noon.
