RU suffers 3-2 loss in series sweep by No. 7 Colorado Mesa

Rangers lead early but fall late to the Mavericks

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team attempted to avoid a four-game skid as well a sweep at Suplizio Field on Sunday but experienced a narrow 3-2 loss from No. 7 Colorado Mesa to end its weekend.

How It Happened: The Rangers held a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Mavericks sophomore catcher Haydn McGeary belted a three-run home run to right center that scored both freshman infielder/pitcher Jonathan Gonzalez and sophomore outfielder Tanner Garner from third and second, respectively, for Colorado Mesa's go-ahead, 3-1 lead.

This was all CMU would need to complete the sweep. Gonzalez singled to shortstop to start the inning, and Garner reached base on a fielding error.

Regis cut its deficit in half, 3-2, when junior catcher Roger Riley hit a solo home run to left in the top of the ninth. However, RU could not capitalize on it, and the game ended with that score.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on junior outfielder Kyle Koontz's sacrifice fly to right field, which allowed redshirt freshman infielder Colten Chase to score from third. Chase hit a triple to right center to get the offense rolling for Regis in the previous at-bat.

Game Notes: Riley went 1-for-3, including his home run at the plate, which resulted in a run scored and an RBI. Koontz, who went 1-for-3 with a double, had RU's other RBI. Chase turned in a 1-for-2 performance that included his triple, and he was also credited with a run scored, one walk, and the Rangers' only stolen base.

Junior infielder Mitch Albin recorded a single in his 1-for-4 showing with the bat. Junior outfielder Coby Zimmerman contributed a walk. Sophomore pitcher Justin Kleinsorge (4-1) pitched 7.0 innings on the mound in the loss in which he allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits, while walking no one and striking out nine.

Up Next for the Rangers: RU falls to an 8-10 record overall and an 0-4 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. The Rangers begin their first home four-game series in conference play for the 2020 season when they host CSU-Pueblo (10-6, 2-2 RMAC), beginning at Regis Baseball Field on Friday at 3 p.m.
