Cougars Late Goal Downs Rangers in 78th-Minute

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – After a promising win over a top-25 opponent this past weekend, the Regis University men's soccer team (7-4-1, 3-2 RMAC) suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Colorado Christian University Cougars (9-2, 3-2 RMAC) on Friday afternoon.

How It Happened: It was a very evenly matched affair in the first half at Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood on Friday. In the opening half, the teams played all 45 minutes without any goals. A credit to both the Regis and CCU defense as the shots were split 5-6 respectively in the opening half. Senior Cooper Erickson was forced to make three saves in the half, while the Cougars keeper did not make any. Of RU's five shots in the first half, none of them were a threat to find the back of the net.

In the second half, Regis amped up the attack. Unlike the first half, the Rangers unleashed for nine shots, five of which were on target, but all were saved by the CCU goalkeeper. RU also held the Cougars to only three shots, but one of them found the net in the 76th minute that put the home team in front 1-0. Erickson saved one of the two shots that reached him in the second half. Immediately following the goal, senior Kristian Hooker laced a shot that missed wide right. Then in the 85th minute, junior Lucas Durval took a shot that was saved. That was the last true opportunity the team had to level the match at one. The final whistle sounded after 90 minutes and CCU earned the 1-0 win over Regis.

Game Notes: Hooker and graduate student Parker Klein led the team with three shots apiece, while junior Vilhjalmur Kaldal and Durval accounted for two shots each. Graduate students Jean Carre, John Halter and Jake Brown along with senior Michael Jimenez all recorded one shot in the match. Erickson made four saves in the game, but he was caught off guard with a volley from roughly 25 yards out beat him to his left for the only goal in the game.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University men's soccer team now shares the fourth spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings. Tune in on Sunday at noon as the Rangers travel to Golden, Colorado to battle the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (9-3, 4-0) in a rematch of the non-conference game that Regis won 2-1 on September 8th of this season.
