DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team (7-5-1, 3-3 RMAC) traveled to Golden, Colorado to battle the No. 25 ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (11-3, 6-0 RMAC) on Sunday afternoon. A penalty kick in the second overtime period proved to be the difference in the match as Mines downed Regis 3-2 in double overtime.
How It Happened: The Rangers drew first blood in the match as junior
Vilhjalmur Kaldal scored his seventh goal of the season in the 23
rd minute to give RU a 1-0 lead. That lead would remain as the game reached halftime.
After the break, the teams went almost 23 additional minutes without any goals. In the 69
th minute, the Orediggers scored their first goal of the game to tie the match at one goal apiece. 10 minutes later, Mines struck again to take a 2-1 lead over Regis. With less than 11 minutes left in the game, things looked bleak for the Rangers. That was until Kaldal broke through with his second goal of the match, scoring 90 seconds after the Orediggers took the lead. The goal from Kaldal leveled the game at two and brought some momentum and hope back to RU.
No goals were scored in the final nine minutes of regulation and the game would move into overtime to decide a winner. After another scoreless 10 minutes during the first overtime period, a second overtime period was necessary. Early into the final overtime period, Regis was called for a penalty inside the 18-yard box, giving Mines a penalty kick opportunity to win the game. The Orediggers converted on their shot which gave them the 3-2 win after 101 minutes on the pitch.
Game Notes: The Rangers and Mines each had seven shots in the first half, but in the end, Mines outshot RU 22-13 with nine shots on goal compared to only five for Regis. Graduate student
Tim Dolan made five saves in the match to lead the two goalies. One save was credited to the team as they made a goal line save. Kaldal scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season as he now leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) in goals scored this season.
Up Next for the Rangers: With a 3-3 record in the RMAC, the Regis University men's soccer team ranks sixth in the conference standings. Next weekend, the Rangers will look to rebound with a couple wins when they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to play against the Westminster College Griffins on Friday, October 22. Two days later, the team will meet up with the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks for a 2:30 p.m. match in Grand Junction, Colorado.
