No. 24 RU Bounces Back With 3-1 Over CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – A night after the Regis University volleyball team (17-5, 12-2 RMAC) nearly took down the No. 1 ranked team in the country, they were back at it on Saturday night. Regis needed only four sets to put away the Colorado Christian University Cougars (9-13, 6-8 RMAC).

How It Happened: The Rangers had their best offensive set in the opening set of the night. RU hit .391 in set one with 12 kills, six blocks and two service aces leading to a 25-15 win. The defense held the Cougars to a -.077 hitting percentage in the first set.

With a 1-0 set lead, Regis doubled down and won set two by a score of 25-20. Both teams had 14 kills in the second set, while the Rangers narrowly outproduced the home team in efficiency. RU hit .333 in the second set and with only one block for Regis, CCU tallied a .313 hitting percentage.

The third set was a bit of a step back for the Rangers as they failed to record a block, and they were outproduced 19-13 in kills. RU's hitting percentage dropped to .189 while the Cougars registered their highest hitting percentage of the match (.378 H%) with three blocks as well. The home team avoided the Regis sweep with a 25-21 win in set three.

After a frustrating third set, the Rangers dug in and got back to business. Though things were still not going their way offensively, the service line and defense at the net helped RU close out the match. Sophomore Halle Theis and junior Nadine Burbrink capped off a big run for the visitors as they opened a 13-6 lead in the fourth set. The lead grew to 10, 18-8, as graduate student Sophie Griese aced her serve on back-to-back points. CCU responded with a 9-2 run towards the end of the set, bringing the score to 22-21 in favor of Regis. The offense came through when they needed to as senior Rachel Siurek posted back-to-back kills and Theis clobbered home the match-sealing kill for a 25-21 fourth set win for the Rangers.

Game Notes: Graduate student Caitlyn Burroway led all RU players with 14 kills, adding eight digs and one solo block in the effort. Siurek and Burbrink each had nine kills while Burbrink tallied a match-high four blocks. Theis finished with eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Junior Haley Kennedy had 17 digs in the match with two service aces and one assist. Griese led all players with three service aces. Junior setter Mara LeGrand recorded 42 assists with two kills, six digs and a block. Redshirt-senior Rebecca Abrahamson posted a team-high .429 hitting percentage with four kills on seven attempts with only one error, recording one block in the match as well.

Career Note: In this match, Caitlyn Burroway collected her 1,500th career dig as a Ranger. She becomes the sixth player in Regis University Volleyball history to reach that career milestone. Even more impressive, she joins Denene Jacovetta as the only other Regis Volleyball player to have posted more than 1,500 kills and 1,500 digs in a career. What an accomplishment for the outside hitter from League City, Texas.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University volleyball team will return to the Regis Field House next weekend as they host the Adams State University Grizzlies and the New Mexico Highlands University Grizzlies.
