LUBBOCK, Texas - The Regis University men's basketball team (0-1) had no easy task in opening the season against the No. 9 Lubbock Christian University (Texas) Chaps (1-0), Friday night at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock. The Ranger's did their best to match the sharp shooting Chaps, but were eventually overpowered on the road.
How it Happened: Lubbock Christian capitalized on Regis' shooting woes by opening the game with a quick 10-0 and didn't look back. Graduate student guard
Brian Dawson finally was able to get a break-through layup to put RU on the board just before the first media timeout.
From there though, the Chap's stout defense caused the shooting struggles to continue. The Rangers went 8-25 (32 percent) from the field and 3-13 (23 percent) from behind the arc in the first half. The team was able to get five points from the line to help cut into Lubbock Christian's mounting lead, but Regis faced a 22-point deficit going into halftime.
As the second half began, Dawson hit a big 3-pointer to give his team momentum in the final 20. RU would continue to shoot slightly better than the first half behind the likes of Dawson, junior guard
Eddy Egun and junior guard
Will Cranston-Lown.
A five-point Regis swing with 16 minutes to play cut the deficit to 16 which was capped by Egun getting to the line. However, the Chaps started shooting lights-out again and easily kept the buffer in the double digits. When it was all said and done, the Rangers fell to a very strong Lubbock Christian team, 56-83.
Game Notes: A positive from tonight is how many bench points the team took home (29) compared to the Chap's 20. The team's depth, thanks to the newcomers, made huge impacts on the court that fans will become accustomed to.
Egun led Regis with 14 points and nabbed three boards. Cranston-Lown (4-9 FG, 1-4 3-PT) scored nine points and was 44 percent from the field. Dawson (3-12 FG, 1-6 3-PT) had seven points tonight and had a team-high five assists. Graduate student guard
Ilisia Washington (2-8 FG, 2-2 3-PT) also had seven points and had a team-high five rebounds. Freshman center
Brayden Carter (4-5 FG, 0-1 3-PT) started his collegiate career off right by banging around in the paint for eight points and three boards.
Up Next for the Rangers: The team will look to rebound tomorrow when they travel just down the road to face St. Mary's University (Texas) at 5 p.m.
