LUBBOCK, Texas - The Regis University men's basketball team (1-1) shook off their loss the previous night to Lubbock Christian by traveling just down the road to best the St. Mary's University Rattlers (1-1), 89-81 in OT.
How it Happened: Redshirt junior guard/forward
Kevin Ebiriekwe scored 17 points, leading the way of the five other Rangers who reached double-digits in the 89-81 win Saturday night in Lubbock. After an early 6-0 deficit, Regis came thundering back on a 13-0 run to take the 13-6 lead at the 14 minute mark. The team stretched their lead to 23-10 thanks to a jumper from junior guard
Will Cranston-Lown halfway through the first half.
As the half progressed, the Rattlers would slither back and took the lead with four minutes left before the break. However, a monster tre from graduate student
Ilisia Washington quickly silenced the Rattler crowd. Triples from both teams in the final minute kept things interesting, but RU held onto a four-point lead as the first 20 came to a close.Â
The squads were neck-and-neck in the final 20 minutes as evident of the 11 lead changes and the score being tied 10 times. St. Mary's threatened by extending a lead to as much as nine with six minutes to play, but RU didn't even think about backing down. Back-to-back triples from graduate student guards
Troy Brady and
Brian Dawson gave Regis enough momentum to pull closer with time winding down. Brady would get to the line following the tres and drain his free throws, making the score 73-76 in favor of the Rattlers.Â
Then, Brady the sharpshooter tied the game with a huge 3-pointer with under two minutes to play. St. Mary's would score from the field in their following possession, but Washington responded with a jumper of his own to tie the game back up with just 53 seconds left. Cranston-Lown had an opportunity to put St. Mary's away on a buzzer-beater, but his missed shot signaled the start of OT.
The Rangers caught a second wind in the overtime period and were simply on fire. An 11-3 run through the five minutes soundly put the Rattlers away as Regis took their first win of the season.
