DENVER - The Regis University men's basketball team (2-1,0-0 RMAC) returned to the friendly confines of the Regis Field House for their home opener versus the San Francisco State Gators (1-2,0-0 CCAA), Thursday evening. Junior guard
Eddy Egun (16 pts) led the team to a dramatic come-from-behind win, giving the squad their second victory of the season.
How it Happened: A 7-0 run from SFSU before the first media timeout made things difficult early for the Rangers. Redshirt junior guard/forward
Kevin Ebiriekwe ended the run and gave Regis their first bucket when he got a layup in the paint at 16:47. The Gators would pull away again though and led by as much as 15 with four minutes to play in the half. RU stuck around though and reduced the deficit to nine with a field goal from Egun with under a minute left. SFSU got to the line on their following possession and split the pair, giving them a ten-point advantage at the end of the first 20.
The Rangers opened the second half swinging with a bucket from junior guard
Will Cranston-Lown. Following a tre from the Gators, jumpers from Ebiriekwe and Egun cut the SFSU lead back down to seven, but the Gators yet again pulled away. RU's back was against the wall down 15 and 13 minutes to go. But the team refused to give up and kept chipping away.
Graduate student guard
Brian Dawson swung the momentum Regis' way with a monster 3-pointer on the fast break. Then graduate student
Ilisia Washington wanted in on the fun and drilled another triple to shrink SFSU's lead to single-digits. Later on at the 5:51 mark, Washington kept his hot hand with yet another huge three which made the score 68-63. Then with about a minute to play, Cranston-Lown made it a one-point game with a jumper in the paint which absolutely ignited the crowd at the Regis Field House. The following Gator possession would result in a missed triple and RU snagging the board. With time running out, Cranston-Lown gave Regis their first lead with another field goal and just 10 seconds on the clock. From there, Regis free throws would cement the 78-75 victory for the home team.
