DENVER - The Regis University men's basketball team (7-1,2-0 RMAC) picked up their second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) win of the season, Saturday night at the Regis Field House. Graduate student guard
Brian Dawson led the team with 21 points in the win over the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers (2-6,0-2 RMAC).
How it Happened: The Rangers led by as much as 15 points in the first frame after graduate student guard
Troy Brady drained a triple on the fast break. After that though, SDSMT thundered back on a 21-8 run to close the gap as well as the half, making the score 39-38 in favor of the Hardrockers as the teams headed into the locker room.
Regis regained the lead though when Dawson nailed back-to-back 3-pointers at the 13:53 mark in the second half, pushing RU in front, 54-53. The Rangers would continue to ride their 60 percent shooting from the field to hang tough, but SDSMT was shooting just as well (66 percent). It would be a one-score game for the remaining seven minutes of play with eight lead changes. However, with the Rangers leading by a bucket and under a minute to go, the Hardrockers got home a pair at the charity stripe to tie the game at 81 and send the game to overtime.
RU exploded on a 14-4 run in the extra period. The run was ignited by a layup from Dawson, a steal from junior guard
Will Cranston-Lown and then a triple from graduate student
Ilisia Washington, all in one sequence to begin the period. With a solid lead, RU never looked back and took the 95-85 win.
Game Notes: Regis is now 2-0 in overtime games this season.
Regis continues to play disciplined basketball. The team committed just eight turnovers compared to SDSMT's 15.
