ST. CHARLES, MO. – The 14
th ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (0-1) created issues for the 2
ndranked team in the country on Saturday afternoon, but difficulties in the second part of the second half led to a 13-10 win for the Lindenwood University Lions (2-0).
How it Happened: The opening 30 minutes of play was a defensive battle between Regis and Lindenwood. Only nine total goals were scored between the two high-profile offenses in the first half. Senior
Jessica Berg scored the first goal of the 2021 season for the Rangers, tying the game at one goal apiece early on. With a couple tie scores, and nearly matching scoring opportunities, RU trailed 4-5 at halftime.
Regis took their first lead of the game following back-to-back goals from seniors
Andrea Macalalad and
Kyleigh Peoples. It was the goal by Peoples that gave the Rangers a 6-5 lead in the second half. After that goal, the Lions scored another goal, but two more goals from Peoples and a goal from freshman
Tia Krats extended the RU lead to three goals, 9-6.
That is when things went downhill for Regis. A goal from LU's Emma Wildhart with nearly 17 minutes remaining in the game sparked a 7-0 run from the Lions that spanned 15:41, culminating in a 13-9 lead for the home team. Peoples scored with 39 seconds left, and that was how the game came to a close with the No. 2 ranked Lindenwood Lions beating the No. 14 ranked Regis University Rangers, 13-10.
Game Notes: Peoples (4 G, 1 A, 5 PTS) was the leading goal scorer for Regis with four goals, Berg (3 GB, 1 CT, 8 DC) and Krats each added two goals and both Macalalad and junior
Alexis Parker each chipped in with a goal in the effort. Berg and senior
Sarah Kate Dhom had a team-high three ground balls. Despite winning the battle on the draw circle (15-8), the Rangers turned the ball over 21 times, and also lost the battle for ground balls 26-16. Senior netminder
Elle Crawford (L, 0-1) picked up the loss with eight saves and a ground ball in the game.
Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 14 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team will remain on the road for another non-conference game this Monday at 3 p.m. when they visit the McKendree University Bearcats in Lebanon, Illinois.
