DENVER – The twelfth-ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team earned their fifth-consecutive win of the season with a 17-8 win over the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened: Today's win fit the theme of most of the Regis wins this season as the Rangers traded opening goals with UCCS, and then opened up a huge lead in the first half, leading to a running clock in the second half. Senior
Andrea Macalalad took a pass from junior
Alexis Parker for the first goal of the game. After the Mountain Lions scored, RU scored eight unanswered goals for a 9-1 lead with 12:31 left in the half. Another 3-1 run from Regis, capped off with a goal from freshman
Tia Krats, made it 12-2 at halftime.
In the second half, the Rangers took their foot off the gas after a goal from Macalalad put them up 13-2. UCCS managed to score five-straight goals without RU putting any points on the board, but in the final 6:20, Regis outscored the visitors 4-1 to secure the 17-8 win.
Game Notes: Records were meant to be broken, and that is exactly what senior
Jessica Berg did in this one. Berg set a new single-game Rangers record with 15 draw controls against the Mountain Lions, passing Danica Cutshall for the top spot. Cutshall ranks first all-time with an average of 4.92 draw controls per game, and is second all-time with 310 career draw controls. Berg's performance on the draw was matched by her relentlessness on defense as she tallied nine caused turnovers and 12 ground balls. Berg's 12 ground balls also tied a single-game record for RU, and her caused turnover total now ranks second all-time in a single-game. Huge day for Berg.
Offensively, Regis was led by senior attack
Kyleigh Peoples who tallied eight points with five goals and three assists. Peoples currently leads the team with 21 goals, 13 assists and 34 total points. Macalalad was also busy on the attack as she scored four goals and added two assists to go along with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Parker followed closely behind with three goals and two assists.
Senior netminder,
Elle Crawford (W, 5-1), was spectacular in goal for the Rangers as she allowed only two goals in 30 minutes of play, making six saves along the way. Freshman
Elizabeth Myotte replaced Crawford at halftime and finished the game with four saves of her own.
Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 12 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team will begin a three-game road trip for their next three contests as they travel to Pueblo to face the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves on April 1 at 5 p.m. The next week, the Rangers will travel to Colorado Mesa University and Westminster College to rematch each of the teams from earlier this season.
