Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

RU blanked at Colorado Mesa, 5-0

Rangers outnumbered in shots-on-goal tally, 10-4

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team returned to the field after nearly three weeks away from it to conclude its regular-season schedule, but unfortunately, was dealt a decisive 5-0 defeat by Colorado Mesa at Maverick Field on Saturday.

How It Happened: Just 32 seconds after the opening kickoff, a pass from sophomore forward Alec Fronapfel reached senior midfielder Ramses Atahualpa, who knocked the ball into the lower-left corner of the goalbox for a very quick, 1-0 Mavericks lead. This was all Colorado Mesa needed, and it just added insurance goals from this point on.

Fronapfel next directed a shot to the low-center area of the net for a 2-0 CMU lead upon receiving a pass from junior midfielder Daisuke Takanaka in the 14th minute.

Following passes from junior midfielder Tristan Widic and freshman midfielder Joey Joiner at the 44:00 mark, freshman midfielder John Roberts then sent a shot to the same low-center area of the goalbox to give the Mavericks a sizable 3-0 advantage.

Atahualpa later found Fronapfel, who drilled the ball to the goalbox's high center, and extended the Colorado Mesa lead to 4-0 late in the 60th minute.

The goals finally ceased after senior midfielder Gabriel Peres scored an unassisted goal, 5-0, at the 61:28 clock reading.

The Rangers had four shots-on-goal in the contest. The last one occurred when freshman defender/midfielder Kyle Bergmeier launched a shot to the high center, but it was saved.

Game Notes: Junior forward Kristian Hooker (4 S, 2 SOG) earned a share of the game-high four shots. Senior forward Parker Klein (2 S, 1 SOG) had one of his two shot attempts on-target. Bergmeier (1 S, 1 SOG) recorded his first intercollegiate shot-on-goal. Senior midfielder John Halter (1 S) and junior forward Ethan Willson (1 S) were each credited with a shot for Regis.

RU was outdueled in shots by an 11-9 margin, which included a shots-on-goal tally of 10-4.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Rangers fall to a 2-2 record overall and a 2-1 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play to end the regular season. Regis will now wait to find out if and where it will play in the RMAC Tournament, which starts this upcoming week.
