Regis swept in doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines

Rangers surrender leads in both games against the Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. – Playing its seventh and eighth games in less than a week, the Regis University baseball team stayed local to face Colorado School of Mines as the home team in a doubleheader and withstood a 15-10 loss in the nine-inning opener and a 4-2 defeat in the seven-inning closer at Jim Darden Field on Tuesday.

"Since coming back from our COVID pause, it has been a tough stretch for our team," said Regis University Head Baseball Coach Drew LaComb. "I applaud our players' toughness and competitiveness. It is not easy to play as many games as we are [playing] in so many days.

"However, we are getting better, and the goal is to hit our stride this next week going into the tournament. I am proud of our guys' effort, and we believe as a group good things are going to happen. This next week will be another good test for us, and I know our guys are looking forward to getting back out on the field."

How It Happened | Game 1: Tied 10-10 in the top of the ninth, a single through the right side by freshman utility player Brady Veltien drove senior outfielder Jason Hall home from second for the go-ahead 11-10 lead for the Orediggers. Hall singled to right two batters earlier to get on base. Colorado School of Mines had all the runs it required after Hall's run.

After leading 12-10, redshirt junior first baseman Toby Scoles hit a bases-clearing, three-RBI triple to right center for a 15-10 advantage, which would prove to be the final score.

CSM went out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on Hall's RBI single through the left side that scored Scoles from second. Scoles had a game-opening walk.

Hall reached second on a double steal as freshman outfielder Wayne Moeck, who singled to right, stole home for a 2-0 lead in favor of Colorado School of Mines.

An RBI double down the left-field line by senior right-handed pitcher/infielder Gabe Garvens sent Hall home for a 3-0 CSM advantage.

The Rangers began cutting into the deficit in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore infielder Matt Marlow singled to center to score freshman outfielder Levi Padilla from second for a 3-1 deficit. Padilla led off the inning with a walk.

Senior outfielder Kyle Koontz, who walked to get on base, trimmed the score to a one-run margin, 3-2, upon scoring from third off of senior infielder Brevin Owen's RBI sacrifice fly to center.

Regis had its biggest inning in the second, where it scored four runs. With a 4-3 lead and the bases loaded, Marlow singled up the middle to score Padilla from third and freshman infielder Braxton Boyle from second for a 6-3 RU lead. Padilla singled to second on a bunt, and Boyle reached first on an error. Both Padilla's and Boyle's at-bats yielded an RBI.

However, the Rangers' eventual four-run lead was erased on redshirt sophomore third baseman/first baseman Danny McDermott's grand slam to right for an 8-8 deadlock.

Regis retook the lead when Owen crossed home plate from second on senior outfielder Andy Beyene's RBI double down the left-field line for a 9-8 advantage. Owen singled through the right side.

Freshman catcher Reagan Guthrie's RBI sacrifice fly to center, which allowed senior outfielder Coby Zimmerman to touch home from third, extended the lead to 10-8. Zimmerman singled to center.

Down 10-9 in the ninth, the Orediggers tied the game on Garvens' single through the left side that allowed graduate outfielder Trevor Howard to score from second.

Game Notes: Zimmerman opened the doubleheader with a 3-for-5 showing and scored a run. Padilla claimed a 2-for-3 performance in the opener, contributing two runs, one RBI, and two walks. Beyene posted a 2-for-4 opener, consisting of a home run and double, scored two runs, had two RBI, and drew one walk. Marlow recorded a 2-for-4 result at the plate and had a team high three RBI as well as one walk. Boyle turned in a 1-for-4 outcome, scored a run, and had two RBI.

How It Happened | Game 2: Evened up at 2-2 in the fourth, Howard's RBI single through the left side pushed McDermott home from second for the eventual game-winning run and a 3-2 lead for Colorado School of Mines. McDermott walked and stole second prior to the hit.

Garvens then directed a solo home run to left to give CSM a 4-2 lead in the sixth, bringing the game to its final score.

RU moved to a swift 1-0 advantage in the first on Marlow's RBI single to right, scoring Boyle from second. Boyle singled to left before coming home.

The Rangers lead doubled to 2-0 in the second inning on Padilla's RBI single to right that scored senior outfielder Ryan Tierney from second. Tierney opened the inning with a single to shortstop.

Regis later led by 2-1 in the fourth but lost the lead when freshman utility player Luke Folsom scored to tie the contest at 2-2 as McDermott stole second. Folsom reached first upon being hit by a pitch.

Game Notes: Marlow ended the day with a 3-for-4 showing and added an RBI. Tierney and Boyle each had 2-for-3 results with the bats, scored one run, and stole one base, with Boyle also drawing a walk. Padilla's 1-for-4 performance in the closer also came with an RBI. Junior pitcher Justin Kleinsorge struck out five while giving up four runs (three earned), five hits, and three walks.

Up Next for the Rangers: RU falls to a 17-15 record overall and a 13-15 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play. The Rangers, who have lost five straight games, will complete their final road series of the regular season when they face UC-Colorado Springs (23-7, 19-7 RMAC) in another doubleheader at Mountain Lion Park on Tuesday. The nine-inning opener starts at noon, and the seven-inning closer will commence at 3 p.m.
