DENVER – The Regis University men's soccer team (4-1-1) matched up with their cross-town rivals, the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners (3-3-1) in a non-conference tilt that ended in a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods and 110 total minutes of play.
How It Happened: Regis and MSU Denver played through a scoreless first 45 minutes in which both teams had three shots. Graduate student goalkeeper,
Tim Dolan, made two critical saves in the opening half which kept the match scoreless heading into halftime.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Roadrunners drew first blood as the Rangers were called for a handball on a shot that came inside of the box, providing the home team with a penalty kick opportunity. Dolan, who was on his game all night, made his guess and the dove to his right side but the kick sailed into the opposite side of the goal for the first goal of the game. At that point, RU started putting on the pressure offensively.
After recording three shots in the first half, Regis doubled up on that number with six shots in the second half. Near the end of the second half of play, the Rangers still had not found the back of the net. After junior
Vilhjalmur Kaldal
drew a foul just outside of the box, RU set up for a free kick. Kaldal took the shot, beating the goalkeeper over the top, but the ball hammered the crossbar and trickled away.
Once Regis retained possession deep in the offensive zone, Kaldal took another shot which the goalkeeper was barely able to keep out of the goal. That is when junior
Lucas Durval struck with the game-tying goal for Regis. Durval received the ball and laced a shot from 16 yards out which beat the keeper on the near post, tying the game 1-1 with only 2:08 remaining in the game. The game carried over into overtime where MSU Denver held the Rangers without a shot. Dolan was forced to make two more game-saving stops in the two overtime periods which staved off the Roadrunners attack.
After the second period of overtime ended, the score remained tied at one goal apiece and the match resulted in a draw.
Game Notes: Durval scored his first goal of the season when the team needed it most. It was only a matter of time before RU was going to score, but they were running out of time before Durval's heroics. Dolan finished the match with six huge saves, only allowing the goal from the penalty kick. Regis shutout MSU Denver 8-0 on corner kicks but were edged out overall with a 9-11 margin in shots and 3-7 for shots on goal.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis University men's soccer moves to an overall record of 4-1-1 before the head down to Pueblo, Colorado to take on the ThunderWolves of Colorado State University Pueblo in the final non-conference game on the schedule. That game is scheduled to kick-off at 1 p.m.
