DENVER - The Regis University men's soccer team (2-0-0) came ready to play against the No. 4 ranked team in the nation - the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (2-1-0) Wednesday afternoon on the Regis Match Pitch. In a thrilling yet somewhat chippy game, the Rangers held on to a 2-1 lead to beat the Orediggers for the first time since Sept. 24, 2014.
How it Happened: Senior
Kristian Hooker got Regis on the board quickly in the 4th minute of play off assists from junior
Lucas Durval and graduate student
John Halter. The first half would see two cautions issued to both teams, signifying the fierce rivalry between the schools. Just before the first half came to a close, Lucas King of CSM found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Just after the break in the 48th minute, senior
Ethan Willson lifted RU above Mines as he scored off an assist from junior
Vilhjalmur Kaldal, making the score 2-1. From there, the Rangers' defensive line and keeper
Cooper Erickson held strong. One more caution would be issued to Regis while two more were given to Orediggers, but that would be it. Regis won by a margin of 2-1.
Game Notes: Despite losing, Colorado Mines actually out-shot RU 15 (7) - 7 (6). They also had five corners while the Rangers had two. Hooker and Kaldal led the team in shots with a pair each. Erickson had five saves during the game which were his first of the season, making his save-percentage .833. His record is now 2-0.
