DENVER - The Regis University women's basketball team's (9-7,5-4 RMAC) comeback fell short as the University of Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (5-10,3-6 RMAC) improved their conference record to 5-4 with a 66-64 win over the Rangers. Junior
Josey Ryan led Regis with 20 points in the loss.
How it Happened: UCCS had one of their best starts all season as they cruised to a 20-6 lead over RU to open the game; they were shooting an incredible 70% from the field. But, down by 14 points, the Rangers came back with a 19-6 run through the second frame, cutting their deficit to just one point as the teams headed into the locker room.Â
Ryan scored a nice layup in the paint to open the second half, giving Regis their first lead of the game at 27-26. From there though, UCCS got back on track and closed the period with a 15-7 run, inflating their lead back to seven points (41-34). Â
Regis began the final frame with Ryan getting a pair at the charity stripe and a huge triple from freshman
Megan Pohs. The Mountain Lions would get a bucket on their following possession, but junior
Morgan L. Smith drained another 3-pointer which cut the UCCS lead to 43-41. The two teams would continue to trade blows before the score was deadlocked at 56-56 when the final buzzer sounded, indicating extra time to decide a winner.
It was neck-and-neck through the final five minutes of play until, with the game tied at 64-64, the Mountain Lions got to the line after a Regis foul. Maison White drained both of her free throws and RU was unable to get a basket on their final possession. UCCS won the OT affair, 66-64.
Game Notes: The Rangers were 34% (21-62) from the field and 20% (5-25) from behind the arc.Â
RU scored 17 points off of 21 UCCS turnovers. Regis only committed 14 turnovers.
Regis got outrebounded by a margin of 45-36.
Ryan (6-11 FG, 1-5 3-PT) led the team with 20 points. She also had four rebounds and a trio of steals, plus a block.
Graduate student
Tashika Burrell (4-16 FG, 1-7 3-PT) added 10 points.
Junior
