DENVER - The Regis University women's basketball team's (9-8,5-5 RMAC) nearly edged the second-best team in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) in the Westminster College Griffins (8-4,7-1 RMAC). However, things didn't go the Rangers' way down the stretch as they fell, 58-57 at home.
How it Happened: Regis trailed by just two before the first period came to a close thanks to solid work at the charity stripe. The two squads continued to go back-and-forth through the second period, but freshman
Megan Pohs drilled a 3-pointer and a jumper to end the half. Westminster was in control 28-27 as the two teams headed to the locker room for the break.
The Griffins came out of halftime swinging as they embarked on a 6-0 run which inflated their lead to 34-27 at the 7:35 mark. However, Regis pulled back within striking distance multiple times - the team kept the game within two to three scores for a majority of the final half, but they couldn't quite overcome Westminster's 50 percent shooting from the field. With under a minute to go in the final period, RU had a chance to tie the game at the free throw line, but the pair was split. Regis had a few more chances in the final minute, but the Griffins defense held tough. RU eventually fell, 58-57.
Game Notes: The Rangers' bench produced 21 points compared to Westminster's bench which produced just nine.
Regis shot 30 percent (19-64) from the field and 33 percent (7-22) from behind the arc. They were 70 percent (12-17) at the line.Â
RU committed just 11 turnovers compared to the Griffin's 16.
