Theis tallies match-high 16 kills, No. 17 Rangers sweep UCCS to extend win streak to 11

DENVER, Colo. — Propelled by a fast start, and 16 kills from junior outside hitter Halle Theis, the No. 17 ranked Regis University volleyball team rolled to sweep of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday, extending the team's winning streak to 11 games.

It was the second victory for the Rangers (12-4 overall, 8-0 RMAC) against the visiting Mountain Lions (7-9 overall, 2-6 RMAC) this fall after they defeated UCCS in four sets back on Sept. 10 in Colorado Springs.

"We had some physical and mental fatigue we had to battle through, but we wanted to get off to a fast start and were able to show some dominance in the beginning," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "It got a little messy in the second set, but overall we're happy with the win and how we played."

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis accomplished its goal of getting off to a fast start as the team stormed out to a 6-2 lead and close the set on a 6-0 blitz to capture Set One, 25-13.

Graduate student right side hitter Klaudia Sowizral had five of her eight kills in the opening set and hit .538 for the evening, committing just one error on 13 total attempts.

It was Theis' turn to take over in the second set as she spiked down 10 of her 16 kills in a 27-25 win for the Rangers to give them a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

"Halle had streaks of kills when we really needed them to help the momentum of the game, especially in that second set," List said. "She's been carrying a big load for our team and had to battle through some fatigue at time tonight, but it was good to see her fight through that."

The Rangers never trailed, and led by as many as seven points, in a 25-20 win in Set Three to put a bow on the Saturday sweep.

Regis finished the evening with a dominant edge in all major team categories, including kills (50-23), assists (48-22), digs (50-36) and total blocks (9-6), four of which came from senior middle blocker Nadine Burbrink.

The four solo blocks were a career high for Burbrink, who currently ranks fourth amongst all RMAC players with 62 total blocks this season. In addition to her defense, Burbrink tallied nine kills on a .500 attack percentage.

"One thing we thought we could do is block against UCCS well and we have been working on different block moves, so to see that translate to the game was helpful," List said. "Four solo blocks doesn't happen often and the hard work is paying off for her."

GAME NOTES
  • Senior libero Haley Kennedy led all Rangers with 20 digs, while Theis was one dig short of a double-double with nine.
  • Sophomore Emma Prentice recorded her first career kills on Saturday, finishing with three kills on just three swings.
  • Senior setter Mara LeGrand posted 42 assists and eight digs.
  • UCCS was limited to 23 kills and a .050 attack percentage.

UP NEXT: The Rangers continued a three-game home stand this upcoming weekend when they host Adams State University (7 p.m. Friday) and New Mexico Highlands University (3 p.m. Saturday).
